Why is Rivera failing as a head coach?

I think you hit the nail on the head with the inexperienced angle. Rivera is a first time coach. Half way through his second year. I can't think of many head coaches that came in and turned around a bad team in one or two years. It takes time.

I also think Rivera will get next year. He is building a team damm near from scratch. He has done well, not well enough for most folks, but well. If we continue to fight and even eke out some wins. I believe he will at least get next year to see if he can finish the job.

It's pretty pathetic where your standards are if you think he's "done well". I'd rather see him in an oven "well done".

You don't come across as anything more than a casual fan of football so i figured you didn't really know how the game works. Our talent is fine enough to be winning more than one game. The rest falls on coaching, i don't understand how you fail to see that. Atl, Dal, Sea, and now Chi losses all fall on coaching shoulders.. Yea Cam fugged up a few throws, and receivers didnt catch balls they could have, but the fact of the matter is we should have never been in positions where those certain plays mattered. Our coaches seem unintelligent which transposes to our young players who haven't built up the rep to blatantly ignore a coaching call that seems irrational.

rising to a new level around here.

A. Because most head coaches fail at their first job as HC in the NFL.

I don't think the read option being part of your offense is wrong....I expect more teams to use it over the next decade. Problem this year is Chud got lazy and relied too much on it and ran it greedily. Also worked away from the important role the TEs played in it last year (not only having 2 rec options but added blockers as well). I think the 3 WR sets imploded things more than the read option itself.

Relying on 3 WR sets with 1 TE (usually also going out on a pattern) cost us the Tampa game without a doubt. Our 1 TD came when Chud went to formations providing more protection for the passing game and more support to the run. Unfortunately it was too little too late.

Rivera is too inexperienced. Bottom line...he doesn't know how to be an NFL head coach. When we hired Rivera, everyone was saying: finally he gets his chance after 7 interviews and no HC job. Now we see what those other owners/GMs saw: He didn't answer the questions right because he had really no idea of how to BE a head coach. In his 8th interview with JR/Hurney he had practiced answering the questions so many times that he probably gave okay answers. The problem is...he still didn't really know how to be a HC.

Whatever gave 7 other teams the idea that Rivera wasn't ready to be a HC is exactly why he isn't a good one. We'll never know how those interviews went but here is my guess as to what they revealed:

1. Doesn't understand really anything about running an NFL offense and would need a offensive genius as an OC
2. Doesn't know how to teach fundamentals or have a good handle on how to run an offseason/training camp
3. Doesn't know how to build player leadership within a locker room
4. Doesn't know how to manage the game clock and scheme adjustments in real time during a game
5. Doesn't know how to motivate mediocre players to perform above their talent level
6. Doesn't know how to turn a culture of losing into a culture of winning

I'm sure there are others.

We are not going to win with Rivera. I've seen enough evidence that I believe we have to move on and start over again with a whole new coaching staff brought in by the new GM. I think we are in line for a top 5 draft pick.

I just can't believe that I actually thought this team had a chance to move into the playoff caliber zone! I guess I was just as delusional as Rivera.

I agree the odds were stacked against him taking the job coupled with he chose a OC that had one really good year followed by a miserable year. It can be marked up as a bad hire.He will go on a be a good DC for someone just like Capers.Unless we get a very experienced GM that feels he can help him he will be gone.
