I think it's irrelevant whether or not increased gun ownership (or # of guns) increases gun violence/deaths. The real question is what the gov's role should be in allowing people to own guns.

i'm pretty ambivalent on the gun control issue as i see significant pros and cons to either one, but if we're going to analyze the constitutional aspect of it it's important to note that the second amendment was written in a historical context where a firearm was a muzzle-loading musket or flintlock pistol, taking at least thirty seconds between shots to reload (and that's if you're a trained expert.) There's not a technological equivalency between that and a semiautomatic handgun or rifle, and that's something important to keep in mind.

establishing what constitutes a firearm as it relates to the constitutional right to own one is pretty fundamental to this argument and it's not really discussed enough, especially when the linchpin of the gun rights argument is "the 2nd amendment says i get to have one."

Do you know anyone that can't get illegal drugs if they want to? I don't.

New laws involving guns will only handicap the responsible gun owners. Criminals or would be crimiinals will get guns just as easily as someone getting illegal drugs. Hell, they are already doing it with the current laws we already have. Do you think someone that has ill intent with a weapon, specifically a firearm, gives two shits about what laws are on the books? The answer is no. And you think new laws will magically make them come to their senses? C'mon man.
