Remember that $ number that we are over the cap is a 53 man roster minus 13-14 free agents. We have to sign that many players just to get a full roster. Cutting more players just means that many more to sign.

Unless I a am missing something(quite possible)....

We have 10 UFA'S AND 4 RFA'S . If you go here http://www.panthers....eam/roster.html there is 73 players listed including those who are free agents. So even if we let every free agent walk then we'd still have 59 players on the roster not including draft picks.

So if we retain let's say 4 of our free agents total and sign 5 free agents from other teams and have 5 draft picks make the team then we are right back up to 73. So that means 20 would have to be cut or moved to practice squad if any are eligible.

I hope Gross doesn't go, but it's time that we address the LT position in the draft.

This draft is going to need to, not only fill holes we currently have, but also fill holes that we are about to have. Ones like finding Gross' replacement, finding Gamble's replacement, finding the heir to Smitty, etc. So begins the rebuild. :(

A lot of teams misjudged the effect the new TV deal would have. Lots of speculation of a cap close to 125 mil. So there are a lot of teams having to jetison some money. The teams that followed the plan are in good shape. The teams that followed the dream, not so much.

There will be some name players looking for a job. What the asking price beomes is the big question. Can you do one year incentive laden contracts? I could be right. T Davis deals so to speak.

Another thing to remember. The vast majority of our cuts are guys on the fringe. We should be able to replace any and all fringe players. It is the impact players we need to get lucky and find. Gettlemen, come on down.

Not mis judged, it's just already been used. 2011 cap was supposed to be 113, nfl borrowed against future caps. Then revenue hasn't been high enough to offset that and the fact players are still getting 57% of revenue. All that equals a very flat cap till at least after 2014 season if not the 2015 season.

I am all for replacing Gross, however, I dont feel comfortable drafting a rookie to protect Cams blind side.

The first round, and I mean early first round, is the only place you will get a rookie LT that will get the job done. Very few rookie LTs make a difference. But there are always a couple. If you get one of those, you should be ok.

Exchanging Gross with a 1st round T would save a lot of money. But it would take away your best shot at getting a true playmaker at the top of the draft.

Glad I don't have to make that decision.

ok so, would you give up our 1st for a difference maker, whether it be on oline or wr or cb? I think I would at this point. Draft picks can be acquired just as fast as they are traded away.

I haven't seen any posts on Godfrey yet. Doesn't he have a pretty sweet deal that was considered over paying? I feel like with Campbell taking the SS role that would make Godfrey a candidate to cut or trade or restructure right?

That's more than I'd pay for Troy Polomalu.

If there is a franchise LT at 14, you almost have to take him. And from my understanding, there are two in this draft. Chances one of them falls to us are slim. So, I would almost bet we don't get one.

Gross is a necessity with a high price tag. If you can replace him and save some money, you have to think about it. Again, chances are slim we can even replace him, so I would expect him to be here next year.

Personally, I would rather get a playmaker. A ball hawking DB with some skills would be my first choice. A DT that can make a difference is a close second. Hell, I'd even be willing to go WR if the guy you want is there.

All that said, if Gettlemen lives up to his reputation, we are going to be alright. I have faith he can actually help Rivera put a good football team together.

As a tangent, with the way guys are being dropped, getting good talent cheap is easier than it has been in a long time. Which is why I expect both Gamble and Gross to be dealt with. Those two alone free us up. That really isn't that big of a mountain.

tl/dr, with one year contracts, it will come down to where do you want to play? If you get the same, or close to it, money to play here, will they come? We may be able to upgrade damm near any position this year through FA. And that is something I thought I would never say.

Got carried away, deal.

I've just gone into a fan "hibernation " mode so nothing is really going to effect me for a while. After its all said and done its going to be almost 5 years before we see a playoff team at the rate we are going.

Then he should have no problem with an incentive restructure.

Exactly.
Had hasn't produced since that deal, 2 years with next to nothing due to injuries.
