#3283740 Is Brenton Bersin really that bad?

Posted by Smithers on 14 March 2015 - 08:28 AM

Your statement is just plain stupid and shows why the Madden generation of fans do not get it.

Wanting a guy who can make a splash play once in a while over a guy who is consistent and moves the chains. Just plain dumb.

Can you explain to me what classifies Bersin as consistent? He moved the chains like 5 times, maybe, over 18 games. Add in the muffed punts, poor ST decision making, and dropped balls (yes, there were a couple), and I don't see how his performance can be considered consistent.

There is nothing about him that excites me. Did he make the occasional catch to moves the chains? Sure. Most were on easy routes and he was wide open, usually being covered by some scrub. I'd rather fill that 4th and 5th WR spot with someone who can make the occasional big play and can also contribute on special teams. Roster spots are too valuable to have him on the roster while not being a contributor elsewhere.

He is just one year removed from a 700 yard season. He made the most of Cobb being hurt in 2013. Last season he fell off the radar behind a healthy Cobb, Nelson, and Adams. Who wouldn't?

I think he would be a good contributor for us. That highlight video shows he plays smart, always knowing where the sticks and endzone are. Signing him won't hurt...could potentially be a big upgrade.

#3214787 Is a staff change out of the realm of possibility now?

I hate Shula's play calling.  I wouldn't mind if he is fired today.  But in all fairness, he hasn't exactly had the personnel to run a successful offense either.  A rookie being your # 1 WR and Cotchery being your # 2 doesn't exactly excite offensive coordinators.  Throw in Bell as your LT...and most OC's would find it hard to be successful.  With that being said...I still wouldn't mind seeing Shula fired.

I saw it on the morning news...you represented well! Great work man!

#3188880 A lot of people talk about Cam and his backfoot

Posted by Smithers on 09 January 2015 - 12:40 PM

I think it's mostly a symptom of him always being ready to run if need be.  QBs that know they will never take off can use their legs differently than if they think there's a chance they'll take off and sprint.  Obviously you're going to set your feet differently taking off on a sprint than throwing.  I think Cam's "streakiness" with his feet is just him setting his feet right on plays he knows he's going to throw it with very little chance of taking off with the ball (e.g. quick slants or plays where he's going to throw it whether the target is technically open or not) and he mostly uses arm on plays where there's a greater chance of him having to take off with it (e.g. long developing plays where he's not sure someone's going to get open).

Exactly.  Earlier this season, when he couldn't run due to injuries, his mechanics were flawless.  His passing efficiency took a nose dive after the Cincy game when his running ability returned.  He needs to find a way to balance the two.

first 4 games:  AVG QB Rating = 94.6; AVG RUSHING TOTAL = 11.6 YARDS

last 11 games:AVG QB Rating = 76.2; AVG RUSHING TOTAL = 43.3 YARDS

I excluded the Cincy game as that was the one game Cam managed to have a decent QB rating and rush for several yards.  That was also the turning point...the first game Cam starting running again this season.

Another thing to note...Cam had just 1 interception through his first 4 games.  He had 11 during the next 12 games.  His mechanics suffered once he started running again.  As JB pointed out above, I think his stance changes as he sets up to run more often than he sets up to throw. I hope he can figure it all out by tomorrow...and play like he did against Cincy or New Orleans.

So these are pretty much all of his career catches...and I wouldn't really call any of these "highlights."  His speed gets me excited, but he has yet to show that he can be a game changer.

#3182728 Who thinks we'll actually beat Seattle on Saturday?

Posted by Smithers on 06 January 2015 - 01:15 PM

Yes, I think we can win this game.  But only if a few things happen:

1.  We MUST go to Olsen often.  The Seahawks have been vulnerable against Tight Ends.  Besides that, Greg is our best receiving option.

2.  We MUST throw deep at least a few times.  We need to take shots down the field to keep Seattle from stacking the box.

3.  We MUST stay committed to the run game, even if it does not work early on.

4.  Graham Gano MUST make every one of his field goal attempts.  If this game is like all the others, a FG can determine the winner or loser.

5.  Our defense MUST contain Wilson.  If he escapes the pocket, we will be in trouble.  If Wilson escapes a few times I can see our D playing a softer zone for containment, which will spell all kinds of trouble.

6.  Our defense MUST limit Marshawn Lynch and force Seattle to abandon the run.

And of course...

6.  We MUST score more points that Seattle.

Easy enough, right?

Nice block by Bell to get him in the end zone.

That wasn't a block..he tripped into the defender accidentally.

Play calling is terrible. Don't understand some of these calls. Arians had made great adjustments, Cam just bailed us out a few times. The read option won't work this half so stop calling it dangit.

Colin Jones playing better with every game

I said it during camp...Jones should have been starting all along. He is extremely fast and athletic and plays with a ton of heart.
