#2245036 Hornets (feels good to say that) hire Steve Clifford as coach

Posted by Johnny Kilroy on 29 May 2013 - 01:50 PM

Tidbits on press conference

- Clifford is impressed with young core's competitiveness

- SVG and JVG were a  great influence on him

- His vision: "Balance Wins" (meaning have to be above average on both sides on ball)...he stresses defense and how it has to be constant but offense needs to be there.

- On Patrick Ewing: Not commenting on staff. Wants a "working staff" and building the right culture. Premature to talk about Ewing.

Anyone else wondering why the Clifford hiring has been in the media for 2-3 days but the Bobcats/Hornets have not made any offical press release as of yet?  Do you think we are having negotiation disputes or do you think another team may have thrown a big offer at him when they heard we were pulling the trigger?  Clifford was scheduled for a second interview on Tuesday that never happened I believe.

Today, Charlotte is going to announce him as the new coach. It will be televised at 2:30 on SportSouth.

I think we can all agree, regardless of the bad calls, that the most deserving team won. Pacers outplayed the Heat for longer stretches of the game. There were times the Heat stepped up defensively and went on mini-runs but Pacers just wanted it more. Not trying to excuse the calls, but the better team won.

This would be my pick even if the ping pong balls went our way and we ended up at 2. One thing that you know you are going to get out of him is defense. A common theme among the remaining teams in the playoffs are they all have good defenses, team as well as one-on-one defenders. Offensively, I think he is underrated and improving. Although he didn't take as many shots as McLemore he shot a better % from 3 (as well as from the field.) His shot has improved tremendously. Plus, I have heard he is an extremely hard worker so that can only bode well for his improvement. His athletic ability is off the charts and makes him a threat whenever he has the ball driving the lane.

I can see him becoming the SG version of Russell Westbrook.

I love it.

Crawford is one of the better ball handlers in the league. That move set up that monster alley oop to Jordan.

Like I said BG didn't travel:

Posted Image
(BG established his left foot as his pivot)

Posted Image
(Left foot still touching the court)

Posted Image
(BG's left pivot foot right before he dribbles/releases the ball. He stumbles after this making it seem like he traveled.)

I think it looked like he traveled because he stumbled but this was after he had already released the ball. He released the ball before he picked up his pivot foot (his left foot).

That Maggette trade was such a good one. Doesn't make up for the Dampier one but we still came out on top.

#2019743 Would you trade for Cousins?

Posted by Johnny Kilroy on 27 November 2012 - 06:32 PM

Love watching him, I've mentioned him a bit over in the NBA Section. He is the most skilled Center in the league. He can score, dribble, pass, rebound. He does it all. He would fit well with this team in terms of skill and what we need in the front court.

The problem with him is his mental makeup. If you watched the Jazz game on NBATV the other day, that was the epitome of Cousins. He got ejected off of two technicals but before he was doing so well. That dunk was ridiculous. He needs discipline and maybe a change of scenery. But there's no guarantee he'll shape up.

The one problem I do see in trading with the Kings, is I'm not sure what they'd want. They have guards in Brooks, Thornton, Evans and bigs with Thompson and Robinson. I think Henderson would be our best trading piece but we'd have to throw in a draft pick because I'm not sure they have a dire need for him.

It'd be tough but I'd definitely do it. Especially if Dunlap can get him straight.

What a rebound by Kemba. Clutch.

#2013443 Would You Trade Gerald Henderson?

Posted by Johnny Kilroy on 24 November 2012 - 09:36 AM

See, I don't know if we really could get a 1st for him. If we did, it wouldn't be from a perennial lottery team. So if you value the unknown of a late first rounder more than Henderson (and what we'd have to pay to extend him) then go for it. But I personally think he'd be someone that could come off the bench for us and produce.

And an expiring really doesn't have much value when you are talking rookie contract. I just don't see his trade value being enough to offset his value he would bring to us.

#2013035 Quarterbacks and Coaching

Posted by Johnny Kilroy on 23 November 2012 - 05:35 PM

There's no way you can put a number on it like that. I think you give coaches give way too much credit in transforming certain players. There's some things you just can't teach like motivation and having the right mindset. At least not to all players.

Yes, coaches can fine tune some things, that's obviously their job. But to diagnose all failing QBs because of inept coaching can't always be the case.

Could Carr, Clausen, Russell, etc. failed because of coaching? Yes. But you can be a really good coach and still not have all your QBs succeed. It just doesn't work that way. Sometimes it's out of their hands and they have done all they could do.

#2012737 What would you guys give up for Pau Gasol?

Posted by Johnny Kilroy on 23 November 2012 - 12:11 PM

I don't know why Lakers would want to get rid of Gasol. There isn't really going to be a trade out there that will be that much of an upgrade.

I don't see why Gasol and Howard can't co-exist. Gasol is an extremely good passer and have seen multiple alley-oops from Gasol to Howard this year alone. Gasol also hangs around the mid range a lot as well.
