Maybe I missed something.

Didn't they say they were trying him there?  Or did they say he was going to start there Sunday?

Big difference. Some overreaction going on here.

He's athletic, smart, and a hard worker. Might be something to look at for the future.

In Topic: This Thom Tillis ad is ridiculous

See the one where the teacher "doesn't have enough textbooks"? When my kids were still in school (7-8 years ago), they were happily phasing out textbooks and buying computers. Did that go away?

Textbook funding has decreased to crazy low levels.  And many schools are using laptops, iPads and chromebooks (don't get me started on Chromebooks).

The problem is, they put money towards these technologies but many schools don't have the infrastructure to handle several hundred kids online at once. Also, most reputable online textbooks aren't free.  So money still has to be allotted for that-- and it isn't.

I know what I'm talking about on this. I've been involved with implementing online classes in my school system (training teachers to teach and create those online courses) and one of the biggest problems is finding (free and reputable) resources to use.  There's some great stuff out there, but the best isn't free.

Too many "kittens" in his closet

All the more reason to vote for him.

I'm not a Hagan fan at all, and I swear part of me wants to vote Tillis because I want him out of his current position because I think he's absolutely so bad for NC education.

This is what we've been waiting for.

Didn't we go nuts after Armanti was cut?

This will springboard us into the playoffs!  Pie for everyone!

Seriously, good move. Just wish cutting him would make Harper 4 years younger.

In Topic: What if we distributed private school vouchers

Interesting topic.

From what I've seen in my 20+ years experience in the classroom and with the work I've done with teachers across the state, here's what I think:

Vouchers to send poor kids to a great elementary school may be useful. But it'd need to be a huge voucher. Five grand ain't gonna cut it.

Even more useful would be to spend that money on a great Pre-K program.  So many of those poor kids show up the first day of kindergarten and are already way behind.

Another good use of the money is an after school program for poor kids, where they learn social skills and have someone to help with homework--the things they aren't getting at home.

For these schools in low-income areas, find the best darn principals and teachers you can find and pay them very well.  Leave them the hell alone and let them work their magic.  (This means relaxing some of the demands the state puts on them, which should be done for all schools in my opinion).  Give money for extra teacher assistants and make class sizes smaller.

Just my opinion, based on my experience.
