Colin Cowherd is generally an idiot but he was on point today talking about it.
You don't require the same things from Reggie Wayne you do Peyton Manning if you are Indy. Peyton is held to a higher standard. Cowherd has bagged on Romo for years.....backward hats belong to the TEs....not the face of the Dallas franchise.
Michael Vick had cornrows and was the highest paid player in the NFL and had a HUGE contract from Nike. Larry Fitzgerald has dreads and just got QB money from AZ, and has endorsements with Nike as well. Truth be told, nothing wrong with clean cut and Cam is a guy that isnt into all that other stuff, but Charlotte is one of the few markets that is anal about it. This wouldnt even be a story or care in NY, ATL, LA. I dont think they're tripping off "image" like this in those markets. I think letting a statement get out like this is a slippery slope because they're players on the payroll who fit that bill and there are fans who have "tatts and piercings" who support the Panthers.
people are taking this all too literal.
There is a difference between Larry Fitz and say a Steve Smith/Jeremy Shockey. JR would be fine if Cam presented himself like Fitz. JR was really paying Cam a compliment in his own way......NOT so much as telling Cam what he can't do. Jez.....
They have similar builds and athletic ability. But obviously Peppers is a little more gifted. Doesn't mean he can't be as good or a great player because Hardy can bring a mean streak where Peppers would rather go and pick the dandelions and 4 leaf clovers out of the grass.
Hardy isn't on the Peppers level in terms of athletic ability.....Peppers is off the charts.
Jimmy wasn't the number 1 overall pick either ...the higher the pick the higher the scrutiny.
correct Jimmy wasn't.
But Cam missed roughly 1500 reps thanks to the offseason per Rivera. And he is already on par w/ Clausen overall........who has 10 starts, 13 NFL games, and was a "polished" qb coming out of school.
so it just seems like most hot air for those trying to find ways to knock him through 2 preseason games where he hasn't turned the ball over and completed more first downs than Jimmy despite less drive attempts.
I agree with you that I believe this team is going to take its lumps with either Clausen or Cam as the starter.
And, I am always worried about throwing a young guy out there too soon and destroying his psyche.
However, I do believe that Cam is mentally strong enough to handle it....at least from what I have seen. If they do start him and we go down this path, I hope and pray we don't have another Carr or Harrington situation.
Starting him early is a risky proposition....and I hope that Rivera and staff make the correct one.
the bust/success right is about the same if you start or sit a top drafted rookie QB.
Mentally, I don't think you can put Cam in a hole he can't work his way out of.....so I am not worried about that. Might was well start him.
Cam doesn't look ready I agree....but a 2nd year Clausen looks no more ready. Might was well roll w/ the one who has the highest ceiling.....and the fact that isn't close makes it an easy decision.
There were 7 snaps in the first quarter that were on 1st or 2nd down and they ran on 3 of them (I think it was 7). They ran the ball. However, by the time we got the ball a third time, I think they wanted to see what Cam could do with his arm because running wasn't generating much in the way of yardage whereas Cam was actually getting positive yards with his arm. Plus, they probably wanted to see how he'd respond when he was down. They were loading the box and daring Cam to beat them, and he couldn't.
Some thing a lot of fans will have to realize is that Chuds was known for not running the ball very much with the Browns, and it's not like they had a bad back there.
they ran on 27% of the running downs. They weren't running the ball. And really it would have been a waste of time to run Williams when you have Cam in getting reps in preseason game 2.
it would also help if someone other than TEs could get open consistantly......they aren't. Not much you can do when they dare you to run and your WRs consistantly can't get seperation. Cam ain't scared to fling it around. Granted he might miss some but there hasn't been much for him to take chances with.
Wouldnt you guys rather them sit out and be healthy when the real games start? Who cares if Marshall destroys the other corners (imo he'd destroy gamble too, but thats another argument) ? It's a preseason game. Meaningless.
b/c if he is destroying our weak CBs that shouldn't be on the field w/ 1s....it is tough for the D to get in a good practice or for us to get a good feel of what we really can do.
and yes, with good QB play Marshall would destroy Gamble.....but not sure you will have that.
Yep. Some here makie some big assumptions, like Cam can pass accurately and running quarterbacks succeed in the NFL. The only reason Mike Vick is flourishing right now is because he taught himself how to throw a football in prison. Cam needs to be feared as a passer under pressure and that is something that has to be earned in the regular season.
only reasoning Vick is good now is b/c Reid > Mora Jr.....by a large margin. Totally different schemes, weapons.....and he is being used different. Vick himself isn't drastically different.
Was watching last night and they made an interesting comment in regards to Cam Newton. In addition to the belief he should be the week 1 starter they gave this reasoning....
The NFL today is about spreading teams out....and if Carolina is willing to use 4 WR sets (could include Olsen) then it would be near impossible for a defense to defend Carolina without huge mismatches on the field. Most teams would look to defend those looks by going to nickel and dime w/ added DBs on the field........but if you do that then there is no way they can handle Cam taking off simply b/c they aren't going to win the battle.
