Roughly 24 mill in cap space, who stays..who goes

Recommended Posts

  • Hire a successful GM to run our team. Hurney has to go unless we want to be in cap hell again.
  • Cut Stewart, Munnerlyn, Mike Adams, CJ, Gano. I would say try to keep Ryan Kalil, but if he's not willing to take a cut, along with his brother, you have to let him go. Larsen didn't play that bad. I'm not sure if he is the future center, but letting him play at least a full year while drafting a center and searching for better options later isn't a bad idea.
  • Unless he's willing to take a cheaper deal, I think you have to cut ties with Star. His production has been down the past 2 years, and we did take Vernon Butler. I'm not sure how great he's going to be moving forward, but if it allows us to sign future FA's, go for it. You can always draft another later on (Gettleman would take one in the first round again).
  • I would love to keep Norwell, which is the biggest option. I didn't even think about the Franchise tag for him. If you weren't able to retain him, could Taylor Moton play guard? Andrus Peat was an offensive tackle for the Saints and transitioned to guard nicely -- I wonder if Moton could do the same?
  • Keep Anderson and Peppers on minimum deals and extending Greg is another thing that needs to happen.

We have to get a big playmaker at WR and RB. We need that mauler at RB to take pressure off Cam being the lead rusher. Nothing wrong with his running ability, but he doesn't need to be the leading rusher on this team. We also need that big play WR to really get us over the top. I would almost be fine with trading up in this year's draft to take Calvin Ridley if we didn't have to get a King's Ransom. I know we've all been screaming for years we need that WR to get us over the top, and this year, hopefully it's addressed. I also think we need a big play defensive back. I wouldn't mind getting Fitzpatrick from Alabama, if he were to fall, which is unlikely, but hey, a guy can dream. I also think a future replacement for TD/Shaq needs to be addressed too. Shaq may take TD's place full time, but we'd need replacement for Shaq then as well. Could be time to do that since TD may be limited next year.

Offense:

QB- Cam stays. Need to find a viable cheap backup (maybe DA, maybe not). Continue to groom Gilbert in that 3rd string role.

RB- CMC should be an every down back. Fozzy is a solid backup. Need to find more depth here. Stewart and CAP should be gone. Armah can stay.

TE- Is Manhertz any good? Have to find an Olsen replacement soon. Dixon can be let go.

WR- Funch, Samuel, Byrd...and then draft or free agency has to find more talent. Shepard can go, he's useless.

OT- Can we start Moton at LT and just see how he does? Or shift Williams over to the left and start Moton on the right? Kalil can be depth....don't even care.

OG- try to keep Norwell. Find suitable backups for when guys ultimately get hurt.

C- Kalil and Larsen get the job done.

Biggest offensive issues were not being able to beat blitzes because WRs couldn't get open on hot routes, and LT can't sustain a block. If you keep Kalil as a starter, you've got to swing protections to his side, or just put much speedier WRs on the field.

Defense:

DT- Star is gone folks. Butler is still young, and needs more development. Have to think you can replace Star with a free agent or draft.

DE- who do we even have?? Hall needs to become a rotational guy quick, and also this position needs to be addressed in the draft and possibly free agency too.

LB- find a long term replacement for TD/Shaq.

CB- is Corn a long term fit at Nickel? If so, we only need 1 starter to be found, or Worley needs to show big time off-season improvement. I think his biggest issue is physically he lacks speed due to his oversized gut. He needs to lose weight, get faster, and be able to press cover someone one day.

Safety- Need an entirely new group of starters and backups here.

Kicker- sign a vet? Who cares as long as they hit FGs.

Punter- Palardy is fine until he isn't, then go sign someone to replace him.

Needs:

Starters- WR, OT, DT, DE, OLB, CB, FS, SS

So, 6 new starters on defense and 2 on offense.

Backups- QB, RB, TE, DE, FS, SS

Total of 14 new players are needed in my opinion.

Losses - Peppers, Captain, Coleman, Adams, CJ, Star, Shepard, Anderson, CAP, Stewart, Dixon

I see people mentioning Stewart, but who replaces him? We just drafted an RB in the top 10 but have no one else beyond him, and we need a real #1 WR.

They used Cap in the falcons game with mixed results as he couldn’t get the tough yards. When Stew leaves we need a short yardage/goaline guy and Cmc can be the all purpose guy

As much as I would love for this to happen -- it won't. Ridley is the best WR in the class and I think is a special talent. I also said, in my post, I'd love to have him. But, unfortunately, we'd have to trade up, and it would probably take a King's Ransom to do so.

We need someone to run between the tackles. We watched all year McCaffrey had problems running the ball because he's a utility player and open-field runner; not a inside the gaps guy. He needs to be put in the slot to be a WR at times while also running Read Option with Cam. We need a guy like Bryce Love, Sony Michele, or even a dark horse DeMarco Murray (if cut, and would take small money). Cam doesn't need to be the leading rusher on this team.

I don't understand the fascination with Norwell. Without Newton's rushing, the Panthers are 31st in the league in rushing. Guards are replaceable.

He was a big reason why Kalil didn't allow even more sacks/qb hits last season...

Yep I agree there’s literally zero chance Ridley is sitting there at 24.

I for one, am I more than ok moving up to get Ridley. We need a WR more than anything and it’s going to cost us.

Captain Munnerlyn's deal was terrible. What the actual hell, Gettleman?

Dude gets benched for whatever, and gets burned all over the field all year, and only comes in really to blitz/get burned.

Terrible, terrible deal. We lose more by cutting him than keeping him around another year.

Dude has played like an outright SCRUB this year.

I think I sadly have to agree with you on Ridley. He won't be there at 24.

I'm not too familiar with this year's draft class, but CBS sports thinks there's someone else out there who could help us out immediately. He sounds like someone we should keep an eye on during the scouting/combine period leading up to the draft. The other prospects listed for other positions sound promising as well.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2018-nfl-draft-carolina-panthers-team-needs-draft-picks-prospects-to-watch/

Tre'Quan Smith, WR, UCF

Smith's an underrated prospect at over 6-foot and 200 pounds with top-level speed and good contested-catch ability. He could be a multi-dimensional wideout for the Panthers. At times, he can move the chains. In other instances, he can be a field-stretcher for Cam Newton. Smith's yards-per-catch average was 19.5 in 2017, and he snagged 13 touchdowns.

I'm still floored everyone thinks we need a RB...we have CAP who is more then capable to be a solid running back if they give him the damn reps.  Every time he gets rolling, they shut him down.  Save that draft pick for a bigger area of need.

CAP mixes reasonably good runs with WTF moments in near-equal proportions. He hasn't shown he can be anything in this league. You have to be able to pass protect, catch checkdowns, and not fumble simple pitches to play RB in the NFL.
