On Friday, defensive end Julius Peppers announced his retirement after 17 illustrious seasons.

After wrapping up a promotion for Best Buy at SB Live in Atlanta, Kuechly learned of the Peppers news.

“I’ve played with guys that are potential (Hall of Fame) guys, but Pep is 100 percent a Hall of Famer. He’s larger than life,” Kuechly said. “I grew up watching him. Everybody knows who Pep is. And then to get the chance to play with him and realize what kind of guy he is – just a great player and great person. That’s what everyone has seen. People gravitate towards him.

“It’s been super cool playing with him these two years, and I’ll miss having him around.”

"No doubt a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee," former teammate Kevin Donnalley, a guard with the Panthers early in Peppers' career and a member of the team broadcast crew the past few seasons, told ESPN. "Just the one stat alone, fourth in all-time sacks, makes him that.

"And reaching a number that today's current players still might not get close to. ... When you couple he was so productive for so many years and he's got the stats to back it up ... it's just a no-brainer. I don't know why it would be in discussion."

Number 90, much like 89, will go down as one of the best players in the Panthers brief history.  The bar is set high for those that follow.

Julius Peppers was never at ease letting people in, or noticing him at all. Once, a book of James Baldwin fell out of his travel bag in Atlanta. “Don’t put that in the paper,” he said quietly. He knew people didn’t consider him a thinker, but just a ball player. He didn’t care.

His stats woukd be even more amazing if he played in an era that hadn’t made the three step drop so prominent.  While he alone didn’t force the league in that direction.  Teams certainly realized they needed a three step drop offense if they were goong to neutralize Pep.  He ate on 5 step and 7 step drops.
