In a preseason game with no pressure.

I'd say your job on the line and any future opportunities is about as much pressure as there is

For a camp body kicker who's a total long shot to make the team that's as much pressure as he's probably ever had to kick under. That's him creating film for another team if not ours.

I say keep the new guy. So far he looks good enough to me. Trade Gano to the Bears.

Gano slumped a bit after the NYG game last year, and isn't worth that money.

I don't really care for Gano on a personal level, either.

Gano's first order of business after a bad game is to go around blocking fans on Twitter.

That really says all you need to know.

More Joey S please.

They did win a lot of games under Frank, which is why they have the longest bowl game streak in the nation. Are they an elite team? No. Are they a solid program with good college prospects? Yes.

Oh, and Ohio State won the national championship in 2014 with just one loss. To Virginia Tech. At home in Ohio.

Good to know we got some fellow Hokie Fans here...Got a schedule this season where we can win at least 10 games

it can’t be understated how valuable it is to have a kicker who can attempt 60+ yard field goals in games and actually have a chance as well as consistently kicking the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs.

The contract is a mess but we could do a lot worse. Let’s hope his leg is ok.

Since Gano arrived.

The Panthers have been the best team in the NFL in terms of touchback %.  A totally unsexy and underappreciated feat.

Wasn't Olindo Mare touted for his touchback % too?

Some of you are shell shocked and just never learn.

I'm just talking statistical fact.

The Panthers have been the best in the NFL since 2013.    That is field position.  That is the elimination of potential big plays.   Our coach is Ron Rivera.  Seems like a good thing if you ask me.

I'm not negating your point. Though admittedly if we're keeping it real we have to admit over the years our special teams has been iffy with Rivera. How many times have we practically had to cover our eyes on special teams plays?

But if you're a team wanting to get better for the future, not just the present, you don't let young talented players walk out the door in favor of aging veterans and expect to keep on winning. That's the Panthers way of doing things that we're trying to move beyond. If Thomas frigging Davis can get cut, let's dispense with this hand wringing over the kicker.

One of the NFL's more accurate field goal kickers from 2008-10, Mare was signed to a four-year, $12 million contract following last year's lockout. While Mare led the NFL with 53 touchbacks, his accuracy on field goals dipped to 78.6 percent in his first season in Charlotte.

well, that actually makes another point.  ST has been iffy under Ron.   One thing Gano has largely done....is laregly prevented our coverage team from ever being exposed on kickoffs.

So in the Ron era, one could only imagine what disasters would have happened if Gano wasn't taking the play off the table.

and I am not saying I disagree w/ you big picture.  I have always been on board w/ parting w/ older players.   I'm just not ready to part w/ Gano for the new kid based off preseason game 1.  I might feel different by the end of preseason.

Gano (2017-2018): 93.5 FG%, 91.4 XP% (9 total missed kicks)

Butker (2017-2018): 89.9 FG%, 95.9 XP% (11 total missed kicks)

Yea, he's outkicked him alright...

Please include the amount of extra points, and FG's attempted.

In a hard salary cap sport, you have to take the $$$'s into account on every single contract.  We have a history of overpaying kickers when it's known that it's the position most affected by the yips.

If you are still playing a brand of football that requires touchbacks and the ability to hit the occasional 60+ yarder for the win....then I'm not sure I want you as my coach.

When you have a young QB on a rookie deal who is a starter?....yea you can afford to overpay a Kicker or Punter or what not...when you don't...you can't.  There just have to be positions where you get value, we had that in Butker long term...Hurney fumbled that call, then ultimately doubled down by throwing a huge contract at said inconsistent player.

I don't particularly hate Gano, I think it's absurd that he can't consistently hit XPA's and Ron and Marty don't seem to like for him to have competition....I hate the move and the contract.
