Trey Lance - best QB of this draft not named Lawrence
top dawg replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
That would mean considerably more weeping and gnashing of teeth than usual, and things will get ugly (and probably somewhat unbearable) as you say, but I'll be taking it all in stride. I wouldn't turn on them until probably 2023 or 24, but only if we're still legitimately in rebuilding mode and sucking. -

I mean it has been reported in several places including CBS and Fox Sports that he wore a GPS tracker during the game against James Madison, and that the tracking data was provided to scouts. Based upon this data, NextGen stats even confirmed that it was faster than any NFL QB last season. And the 12th fastest during the season. So I don't know what more to tell you, unless it's a vast conspiracy by the NFL and NCAA (LOL). Anyway, Lance and his team are basically of the opinion that the 40-yard dash in underwear is outdated with modern technology during actual games. And really, they're right. -

I don't think it would take three first rounders. If you're going to do that, you might as well go all-in on Watson. I think that perhaps I have more faith in Rhule (now Fit, via proxy) than some. I don't think that we're going to leave our QB high and dry. Rhule proved to me in one season that he can coach young guys up to be legitimately competitive. If Fit is as advertised, between him and Rhule, they should be able to field a talented team, even if it's using resources outside of drafting first round talent. -

Acquiring a franchise-level QB isn't a damned game! If you believe he is the guy, you do what it takes within reason to get him! All the other sh¡t be damned! -

Because his people said that between tape and the fact that GPS clocked him at 21+ MPH (making him faster than any NFL QB last season), he didn't need to run. The NFL should have enough. -

I agree with the posts, but would just like to say that the TV chart isn't the gospel, and of course that means in theory--and reality--the cost could be a little better or worse depending upon what transpires. I don't believe that this can be overstated. Moreover, I think that some of this "bullish" market is being media-driven. I believe that once the crap starts hitting the fan, so to speak, that most of these teams that we're hearing about aren't necessarily going to do what it takes to trade up! Elway is a wildcard, but how many times can he keep on missing before he gets canned? Does Frisco really want to base their immediate future on a rookie QB while that window for a championship is still open? They'd probably shut it somewhat by trading up, and then all bets are off. The Pats have good money, or so I understand, so they could make an uncharacteristicly bold move and turn their attention to filling out their team with free agents for a couple of years, but I don't think it's Belichick's way to give up so much for an unknown. I think we are legitimately in the midst of a rebuild with an owner that's intent on getting his guy. I don't know if even these admittedly big boys of the sport will want to tussle with a determined Tepper in this situation. We'll see. His reported determination may be all bluster, but I doubt it. [Have you ever seen Trey Moe and Keisha Jones on YouTube?] Tepper gonna make a way! Tepper gonna make a way! (See vid at 2:05 for the voice) -

True for the most part, but his post was very subjective regarding Lance, when he did just as well as the others. None of them were perfect--underwear, no defense or not! -

So, do you believe Allen, Herbert and Mahomes completed all their passes on their pro days? Do ya? -

Well I'm not splitting hairs. I'll take any QB that the Panthers decide to draft. None are perfect, but I want any one of them because as of today, I see the pluses and minuses of them all, and aren't so definitive about one or the other, though I think Lance has the absolute highest upside. -

I know I'm getting older and all, but didy ou not come out and say many weeks ago now that you didn't want Lance? That's not too objective, particularly in light of the fact that I know I and others have pointed out that things like pro days hadn't even happened yet. -
Patriot fans seem excited that Cams back

The jury is still out! If the Patriots can offer Cam another opportunity, they must see something or know something that many don't. I'll trust their judgement and give Cam a commensurate amount of grace before declaring him a backup. -

You're the one that said when he doesn't know what to do he takes off. That's not exactly what's going on and implies that Lance did not have a mastery of his offense or the defensice opposition at worst, or was impatient at best at the slightest hint of the play breaking down. Moreover, he was supposed to run on many plays. That was in direct response to my saying that he knows how to process and react quickly, so much so that some analysts have given him an edge over Fields including Jeremiah who was a commentator today. Furthermore, I didn't try to put words in your mouth, that's why I used the word "seem", to give you space to clarify yourself and your decidedly negative slant against Lance in general. -

All I can say is you'll see. Lance isn't some dumb schmoe! You seem like you think that he doesn't know what he's doing back there, but I believe that he does. He is always cool and under control. Just like he played against "lesser athletes", he played with "lesser athletes" as well. -

All QBs have to adjust to the speed of the NFL, and it doesn't matter which conference or division they played in. The calling of the plays may be considered the easy part; it's the reading of defenses which is more complex, and reportedly Lance did that well! So well, in fact, that some have ranked him ahead of Fields simply due to processing and reacting with accuracy. -

Decision making is decision making. A throw is a throw. Traits are traits! The ability to not only read defenses, but call your plays in a pro-style offense translates to the pros. -

I think that some of you are not projecting into the future far enough. I've said it all along, all Lance needs is more reps! I reject this notion of the lowest floor. I mean, if you want to say he has the temporary lowest floor, fine! Sure, he'll have to take his lumps (as they all will), but once he gets some experience under his belt, you'll see his real floor: the penthouse! The thing with Lance is that the sky is the limit. With his traits and football IQ, the only thing I see messing him up is injury or crappy coaching. -

I know it's Brady because they mentioned it live. -
He was running a pro-style offense--albeit not throwing a whole lot--reading defenses and calling his own plays during the first year that he was the man. That should say something about his mental acuity for the game.
-
Perhaps. He's not someone you take and think he'll be lights out year one; you take him with the expectation of developing him to reach that tremendous upside which will take a couple of years. His traits and (perhaps underappreciated) football IQ are top-notch! He was calling plays and reading defenses in the first season that he played! If that's not a golden feather in his cap, I don't know what is.

Josh Norris believes WR 3 is a big need this offseason

He's a different type of receiver than Samuel, but that doesn't mean that he can't make his lunch money in the slot. I think he'll be a good depth piece at least. -

On GMFB, they did mention his arm or lack thereof. Schrager did say that his arm looks shot. For Cam's sake, I hope that's not true. He's worked hard to get that shoulder right! -
Exactly! In this case 2+2=4
