Reminds me of the Lakers doing this exact thing to the Hornets last season.

Whoa that’s crazy.

Fingers crossed for Bills but who knows he’s getting older maybe the Bucs will hamstring themselves with a bad contract.

They’ve come full circle.

BREAKING: Panthers sign QB Kenny Pickett
WUnderhill replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Idk on Brissett, I think part of the motivation of the FO is to get younger (relative to Dalton) and try to take a shot on a guy that had talent and could possibly still develop, which is why they didn’t go the route of a Mariota or whoever. It’s just they went with Kenny Pickett which I think a lot of people don’t think he will develop which I tend to agree with, but the motivation I think is there, it’s just a difference of opinion. And to be fair the whole league seems to value Pickett over Howell, Lance, etc. Pickett was last traded for a 5th rd. pick, Howell was last traded for something less than a 5th round pick (Eagles sent a 5th but also got a 6th back), and Lances last contract was just $2m. -
BREAKING: Panthers sign QB Kenny Pickett

Brother, you said it’s not even a question that Sam Howell would come in and legitimately compete with Bryce right away when he couldn’t even beat out Tanner McKee last year. Kenny Pickett was ahead of McKee on the depth chart when he was with the Eagles, but Howell couldn’t do the same. I don’t even like Pickett, it’s just this raging about coddling and not bringing in competition when the examples of the competition given are arguably worse. And if it’s possible the FO thinks Pickett is a better QB than Howell, doesn’t that mean they ARE serious about upgrading the QB room? I’m seriously not trying to defend Pickett here, I would prefer Howell for less money, I just don’t get the conclusions that are being jumped to. -

Mmm yes, the mythical Sam Howell. The guy that 32 teams passed up for 5 rounds. The guy that then couldn’t beat out Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke. The guy that when given the keys to the car, got benched multiple times in games for Jacoby Brissett. The guy that Seattle loved so much they never considered him for a second after moving on from Geno Smith and traded for a loss to roll with Drew Lock as a backup. The guy that Minnesota then traded for a loss to roll with Max Brosmer and Carson Wentz as backups. The guy who then could not supplant Tanner McKee as a backup despite McKee being injured. The guy who hasn’t logged a snap since 2024 despite being healthy. This is the guy you are using to say the FO isn’t serious about winning. Well, at least it’s not quite as bad as Trey Lance. Consider for a moment that the FO may possibly think more of Kenny Pickett than Sam Howell (it seems like most of the league does), and they’re paying Pickett pretty much top of the market for backups. I get it, he’s not my first choice either, but to go all in on the no competition narrative just because he’s not your favorite “what if” is a bit much. -
We're through one day of the legal negotiating window. Who are the best free agents still available? Here are NFL analyst Matt Bowen's top remaining names (including one player who will soon be released): Trey Hendrickson, Edge Rasheed Walker, OT Braden Smith, OT Riq Woolen, CB Kyler Murray, QB* Romeo Doubs, WR K'Lavon Chaisson, Edge Jauan Jennings, WR Greg Newsome II, CB Taylor Decker, OT There’s a few OTs here, hope we can get one but no clue what kind of $$ these guys are commanding. A couple older guys and a guy that recently got arrested on a gun charge. Give me one of the older guys on a 2 yr deal to get us by and this FA will have been just about perfect.

He couldn’t even beat out Tanner McKee for a backup spot last year. I’m all for it like I said, especially as a UNC fan, but multiple teams have tried him and he hasn’t beaten literally anybody out. -

Also allows us to play our cards closer to our chest so that now if a LB is sitting there in the 2nd that we like some team isn’t going to feel like they absolutely have to get ahead of us.

$15m per not terrible.

BREAKING: Panthers sign QB Kenny Pickett
WUnderhill replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don’t know much about the QBs in this class, but it is interesting there seem to be a few that were up until this past season considered 1st round picks that are now looked at more in the mid rounds (Sellers, Klubnik, Beck more so 2 yrs ago but still). I wonder if one of those types could be the guy. But also there’s probably good reason they lost favor. I remember when Sam Howell was considered a possible #1 pick, then another year in college happened. -

I mean I’d be fine with either of those but expecting them to push Bryce Young for QB1 any more than Pickett would just seems like wishful thinking and more of “they signed a 1st rd pick reclamation project type but not the one I like most therefore they don’t want to win football games”. -

Who? All this hand wringing but there wasn’t really anybody out there who was coming to Carolina. Murray and Willis weren’t coming here, so who else? We’re in agreement Pickett sucks and we could have maybe gotten a different backup for better money, I just don’t agree that there’s anybody out there that fits what you really want. You saying “physical ability” leads me to believe you want Trey Lance or Zach Wilson which would just be lol if so. I heard Jamarcus Russell is available these days, some scouts say he was the best thrower of the football they ever seen. I mean in terms of relatively young “1st round talent” types, Pickett is about the best there was unless there’s some big names I’m missing. Don’t forget we also tried Hendon Hooker last year and the dude couldn’t make it off the practice squad. -

Yeah Baker was a pro bowler and took the Browns to the playoffs, he just got unlucky to have Haslam as an owner do the whole Deshaun Watson thing among his many other blunders. Carolina had the right idea with him we just had that idiot Rhule. Sam Darnold is a bigger outlier than people think. Geno Smith was a backup or out of the league for it seems like a decade, idk exactly how long but it was a long time. And that Seattle team he looked so good with won the Super Bowl the year they upgraded QB and he went back to being total garbage on a less talented team. People thinking Darnolds are everywhere now. -
BREAKING: Panthers sign QB Kenny Pickett

I’m no Kenny Pickett fan, he sucks and we probably coulda done better for the money, but there seems to be a disconnect with people wanting some sort of high level backup who could potentially become a good starter and win an open competition, and what was actually out there. Willis and Murray are going where they will be given a starting job before they even put pen to paper, which wouldn’t be here, and then what else is there? Varying levels of shitty, busts, washed, career backups, turnover machines, head cases. Bryce Young would easily be the top FA on the market right now along with Murray if he was out there. It is what it is. This doesn’t prevent us from taking a flyer on a mid round QB, which is what a lot of people seem to want anyways. -
Apparently we have to send a second round pick to the Heat because of this whole Terry Rozier mess. Sounds like the league maybe knew he was under investigation at the time of the trade? I doubt the Hornets did because otherwise why only a second round pick instead of giving the Heat their first round pick back. So sounds like the Hornets are paying for something the league didn’t tell them about.

FA Splash: Panthers sign Jaelan Phillips EDGE

I even heard his dog stepped on a bee. -
Having signed Phillips, will they now target a OT for first pick?
WUnderhill replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah I think there is almost no choice, as long as there is a guy there with a first round grade you gotta take an OT. -

It always seemed the way this draft was going to shake out that there would be better options of OT at 19 than edge rushers or LBs. -
FA Splash: Panthers sign Jaelan Phillips EDGE

I just looked up and Burns signed 5yr. $141m in 2024 for an annual average of $28.2m. As a percentage of the cap the year he signed that is 11%. The equivalent for the current cap would be $33.1m/yr. average. So he (Phillips) comes in a bit cheaper if you adjust for the increased cap, and with less guaranteed money. Also if we had re-signed Burns who knows what the rest of the team looks like but almost certainly our OL would be quite a bit shittier than it is now and that’s pretty scary considering the current problems. -

Trey Lance makes Kenny Pickett look like a pro bowler what are y’all even talking about.
