"What are we doing in the draft" 2022 edition.
ForJimmy replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
IF Baker comes cheap and they eat a chunk of his salary, this is the best scenario. Upgrades the QB from bottom of the league to mid-level with some potential to be better. Upgrades the LT and OL all together as a whole making our QB play better. -

I agree with what you are saying but if they go from bad/benched to good the next year isn’t that kind of a one year wonder? Regardless it’s not some unicorn loaded class yet IMO. There is definitely talent to be had though.

He is 6’3” which is average played with 3 NFL WRs that will probably go first round in the Big 10 where the talent goes OSU and then everyone else. His stats look very similar to Fields 2019 season.

Agreed. This might be our best option. Give up little for him and split his contact with Cleveland. If he sucks it’s very easy to move on… -
Drew Carter is going to have a career year.

Best case is Neal or Icky at 7 and getting Baker for cheap only paying a portion of his contract. If Baker struggles we draft one next year, if he plays well we should have some options… -

I think his 5th is already picked up and that’s what he is playing on. I believe he was in Darnold’s draft class. -

I found that interesting too. Isn’t he a OG more than OT and small school… -
I see 2 guys on loaded teams in CJ and Bryce (Bryce has some size issues as well) and then a lot of question marks. Granted a lot more depth than this class, but still a lot of question marks before they play this coming season. I personally like Will Levis and KJ Jefferson (not on the list) out of Arkansas has impressed me. I live in Knoxville so I see a lot of SEC Football. Levis has the arm/heart that keeps his outmatched team in games. Hooker (out of UT) is decent at everything but not great. I've always seen him as a midround backup.

Comments from other GMs about the Panthers draft options
ForJimmy replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
The Steelers have a strong enough team to be competitive with Mitch as a stop gap. Hell they won several with Rudolph. We don’t want a rookie learning from Sam and being developed by Rhule and Co… -

I’d assume that would be for a development player like Willis. He can sit behind Mitch and slowly be developed into their franchise QB. Something we are not equipped to do… -
He will be there at 6. I’ve seen him ranked in the 20s by some.

True and fair point. I hope as our roster is getting more complete we won’t be overhauling FAs every offseason.

Robby Anderson wants Panthers to work out Colin Kaepernick
ForJimmy replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
That guy is I obsessed with Watson. He can’t make a post without bringing him up… -
He has a stronger arm than Darnold, maybe not as mobile, but I agree with the other two. He won a lot in college and has won in the NFL. There are definitely worse options like Jimmy G…

Yeah I was thinking that. Baker would instantly be one of the more talented QBs the Panthers have had. I don’t think we are going to be able to unload Sam and his contract without giving up picks, so I’d just roll with him as the backup (if we acquire Baker). Maybe draft a project like Glass in the late rounds or sign undrafted and cut PJ. Baker with Sam as the backup and Glass as the 3rd/project/practice squad. Who knows maybe Darnold plays well enough to be a decent backup (although very overpriced) behind a better OL.

If we do that means he played well again and we got a starting QB. If we don’t then we should get a comp pick. We could also tag/trade him to another team if he puts up good numbers. Put it this way, if we acquire him and he plays well we will have several options and be in better shape than we are with $18 million dollar Darnold…

I don’t think this will be Sam Darnold level. For one Baker has proven he can play when healthy, which is something Sam never did. It’s also been mentioned that the Browns will pay a portion of his salary. I also don’t think we will trade as high of picks like we did for Sam. If it’s next year’s 3rd/4th and they eat half his salary we should come our way better than we did with the Darnold trade. A better QB for less money/less draft picks. If we grab a LT at 6 he will be (on paper) a solid OL to play behind. It’s definitely not my first choice, but there are much worse things they can do.

I think Baker isn’t as much as their “trash” as they had a very rare opportunity to get a top 5 QB. Had the Watson thing never happened they would be rolling with healthy Baker next year and happy about it. I think all but maybe 7/8 teams would want to upgrade with Watson. The Browns were dumb enough to pay that much for him especially with the legal issues. He played hurt and got his feelings hurt which is killing his stock right now. Plus this happened when most teams were set at QB.

The Baker situation doesn’t seem as bad as other failed QBs we tried in Carolina. Baker would still be a Brown except they had an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a top young QB in the league. He just helped the Browns get into the playoffs 2 years ago when he was healthy. The Niners traded 3 firsts to draft an unknown in Lance because they knew QB was their weakness. Trading for a proven top young QB that you didn’t think you had a chance to acquire until the last minute doesn’t really make Baker a true “castoff” like Jimmy G, Darnold, and Teddy IMO.
