Week Of: Draft Buzz, Rumors, & News (w/updates)

they are a better team, I agree. But what does that have to do with what they traded to get Lance? He's not the reason they are the better team. Maybe I'm missing something. -

Yeah, and how did that work out for them last season? If I remember correctly they went with the not to good guy who needed shoulder surgery over the physical traits' gut they sold their future away for. What does that tell you about drafting traits or potential? It tells me that they have to talk about those things because they suck. It's like saying they're beautiful because of their personality. -

Did you see what SF gave up for Trey Lance last year??? Mamma always said that nuts is as nuts does. -

History tells us that some of those guys will bust and some will disappoint. Happens every year. Even at the top of the list. Nothing is written into stone which is why they are each studied and scrutinized so thoroughly and even then, teams miss all the time. Some more than others but everyone misses. Hopefully, we get ours right. -

If they hate the pick then yes. If they like the pick then no.

Pauline doubles down: “Cross won’t fall past 6”
Panthers Rhule replied to FuFuLamePoo's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm reversed. Ikem, Cross, Neal. I agree Cross is a better pass protector but we can't pass the ball very well and likely won't for a while longer. I'd prefer we just go straight maul, mean and nasty. With our defense and RBs we could win like that. Maybe add another downhill guy into the rotation and we'd have 2 finesse and 2 power backs to mix up. Backfield by committee and replacements for injuries to keep things running. Pun intended. -

Never thought about that before. Good call. -
After watching the Camden interview I want Ikey if he's available. I already liked him but ole' Camden lit my LT fire back up again and Ikey plays hard like he enjoys it. I think he would flourish under Camden and our OL will be solid and perhaps even a strength. Regardless of who is playing QB then it will matter less because we will be able to run the ball and with our D that should be good for more than 5 wins. If we have to we can shoot for a QB next year as we won't have any more excuses as it will be the last piece.

Athletic mock projects NC State tackle to Panthers
Panthers Rhule replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
I always call for Pickett, buuuuuut Ekwonu is my fav LT of the big 3. He's a beast and he's a nasty m'fugga. After listening to Camden and based on him being my LT choice I would have to say if he is there then we take him and kick the QB can down the road a little further. Adding him to the roster would at least allow us to run the dang ball for once. That way, whoever is trying to pass for us at least won't have to do it too often. I think he's just too good to pass on there. Even for a QB. By QB I mean PIckett. -
He only stated the obvious. He's the OL coach. He works for the OC. He works for the HC who okays the final roster. It's normal. I'm pretty sure that neither him nor McAdoo would come here if they were just to be ignored. You don't bring in veteran coaches just to ignore them and especially if your HC is still green.

"What are we doing in the draft" 2022 edition.
Panthers Rhule replied to Verge's topic in Carolina Panthers
And as far as the Baker/JimmyG debate, I'd prefer JimmyG. He's a professional and he's proven that he can at least take a good team to the playoffs. He's a great placeholder imo. Baker is a wildcard and I don't like the way he carries himself. He may have talent but who knows what you're going to get both on and off the field and in the locker room. I'll take a less talented, professional adult. -

All of this seems perfectly logical to me. Not sure if they would pick Cross at 6 if no trade was possible. I prefer Pickett at QB but Corral would fit as well although I really worry about his sustainability considering his size and playing style. He gives me the RG3 vibe and I don't mean that as a knock on either one's ability as they are talented, but injuries are a legitimate concern when evaluating players. -
I'm not sure the other GMs would be willing to take him. Forgetting football reasons. It's one thing to let a disgruntled vet walk out of a contract. It's totally another to let a QB on his rookie contract do the same 2 seasons early. If that happened and became the norm then the entire system has a major problem. Teams are forced to once again overpay players who haven't earned it at the costs of players who have. I wouldn't think the Player's Union would be to pleased about that either. Nor the other players for that matter. They are all about getting yours but not if it takes away from mine.

Panthers meet with Sam Howell
Panthers Rhule replied to DaveThePanther2008's topic in Carolina Panthers
We're not taking the average Liberty QB at 6 so don't worry anymore. No one is. I doubt he's drafted in the 1st round and if someone does it will be Pittsburgh because they face the ravens twice a year and they play that game too but I still even doubt that. -

Polian just said what I've been saying for the last month. Forget the media narratives and the idea of only one good season, low or high ceilings, superstar potential etc. Those are only narratives. You must look at what they have done and what they can do. Good QBs have certain qualities that make them good. Pickett has those qualities. Put him in the right system and surround him with the right players and he has the qualities and the "IT" factor to be successful in the NFL. He is absolutely, hands down best prospect in this draft. It also doesn't matter if this is a weak class or not. It's about the individual player and Pickett has what it takes to be a good NFL QB and especially with Carolina. Our new system should be perfect for him and we have the weapons' already in place. If our new OL is an improvement too, then we could have a decent offense that could become great within his rookie 5 year period. I didn't come into this draft season with a QB in mind as I don't follow college football and only watch QB tape when the off season starts and I went from the idea of drafting an LT to drafting Pickett only because of what I saw him do when I watched him play and learned about McAdoo and his system. If we can draft him then we all should be ecstatic. No player is 100% a certainty and especially QBs but Pickett is definitely a good fit for us to take our shot on finally. I believe he can be our franchise guy and I've never said that before about any QB we had a possibility of drafting.

I keep expecting teams or even the NFL to make rules about online postings from players. It's always been a problem but now it's getting ridiculous. Players are using it to negotiate, or pressure GMs, or just interfere with team decisions or other players' possibilities. I don't think it's professional or correct. If I criticize my company, boss or colleagues online I'll get fired. Why should athletes be different?

1st in cap space but the credit cards are maxed......why?
Panthers Rhule replied to AU-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm not a contract or cap expert for sure and will gladly listen to those who know more about that then I but I have found this explanation. Not all contract restructures are bad or signal that the team is in trouble in the future. Considering that the NFL allows teams to carry over cap space year-to-year, the cap space saved in 2020 can carry over and help in 2021, if the extra space isn't used. If the team plans accordingly, restructuring is an extremely useful tool to create meaningful cap space. What I cant find is does this mean that we can trade them in the final, more expensive years of the contract that have less dead cap penalties in their contracts and essentially pass the added future cost of the move on to the team who trades for them or not. Like CMC for example. Without going into precise details of his contact, if the penalty of trading him is less in 2023, we could restructure for this season, trade him next season and therefor the money that we saved this season would be passed on to his new team and paid by them instead of us. Is that correct? What I mean is if we are supposed to pay him 20 mil both seasons but restructure and only pay 15m this season with the cost next season being to pay 25m but instead trade him and the new team pays the 25m instead of us and we save paying 5m of his total contract on our cap. If that's true then our restructures would save of cap space this season and cost us less in overall. meaning that we may be considering trading away our more expensive vets before their last season of their contracts and saving the cap money.
