Top 5 draft targets for positions of need
strato replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think you look at needs. The you get to the spot… if some guy fell and is there, and is so much better than your need options you can do two things. Take him, or trade back if possible to better match your need guy to his value. Last year we didn’t see the right value in our needs at our spot, and went BPA because we had room for a WR. Worked out great. If it were a LOT there who was BPA? May not have worked so great -
Yeah you’d probably want to do a big signing bonus small salary for Linderbaum in 2026. Icky’s 5th year is guaranteed but you won’t likely be paying him anywhere near what his extension when healthy would have called for. We have a year to play Icky’s situation as unknown. By the end of the season they should know how he is healing. You got G, ROT, even LOT still maybe, and off the roster coming for 2027 with him. I am figuring we have to draft a T high in (one of) the next two drafts. If not two Ts. There will be a lot of flexibility with Moton easing out of the picture and possibly Hunt. I don’t see how we keep paying that money for G but if we had two OTs on rookie deals, it could be worked out I would think.
-
Well when I look at the OL I see two OTs on rookie or journeyman deals n say, 2027 maybe 2028. I think the long term deal for Icky will be off the table. At a point the Hunt deal will be nearing or at its end. Depending on how they decide to approach it, this OL could be 60% to 80% different than 2025 fairly soon.
-
You can argue ‘should’. It certainly could have been. And might be this year. You gonna complain if we instead sign the best proven C out there?
-
Yeah we traded up for a guy who, can never have too much invested in his support. The job is never finished. Some people want another WR in the 1st. Or a TE.

Top 5 draft targets for positions of need

Well I look at the option of a bust. Seen people burned too many times on these small school guys. The competition they face matters. I am better taking them later when the stakes are lower. -
I saw today where the tag for a C was something like 28 mil. Because the rules lump all OL positions together for the tag number calculations. So Baltimore will likely not be tagging Linderbaum, I mean… would you? Doesn’t mean they can’t get him back. I wouldn’t mind paying if they could make the numbers work. Because now we are gonna be weaker at LOT to start with, but beyond that we kind of half measured the interior with not upgrading C. Get stout all across the inside.

JJ and Dalton, and a couple of others put a hit on that average age number. Overall the team feels young to me.

Should Dave Canalas be on the HOT seat??
strato replied to Jackson113.2's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think it is pretty clear they are not looking to supplant Young. There is no urgency to find a potential replacement, even as a backup. The kid from… Arkansas? Why the hell not? But it won’t be anyone that threatens for 2026. They are proceeding with their optimism intact still. They are gonna rationalize the 1-3 finish, and focus on the nice showing under the bright lights of the playoff game, and the stadium environment that day. They have a case for it, but it ignores a lot of negatives that we experienced this year. All of them that were QB related, really. -
I am in agreement. A guy with that profile, a talented short timer, isn’t a bad idea. We got a lot of mileage from our draft last year but you can’t get instant adult level production from these young guys. Reliably anyway. This guy could help us take up the slack.
-
If it were an ultimatum, one or the other? I would agree. We have 2 good WRs who are in their prime growing phase. And between the two we won’t be paying 10 mil per season. fug giving some guy 20 million. Plus we have a QB that really has only fed these guys targets a few times. Where is the benefit that comes close to the cost? Plus I don’t want to release XL.
-
Yeah that last line.. I don’t want anything to do with him even though it would be fun to challenge Bryce with a leadership situation. I’d like to see how he handled it. It also made me think. It seems like these twitch type fast WRs are more prone to diva jerk personality disorder. Why the hell is that? Rhetorical…. Generally high strung is my guess. Just running on a different clock.
-
Yeah I briefly considered that. So what is the deal with this? League year starts March 11th. Legal tampering with FAs allowed I think the 9th. Assuming there can be no trades until the league year starts, but if a guy is released he is fair game right now?
-
Yeah this is the more interesting proposition. Fortunately I don’t think we have to worry about Morgan being sucked into Tyreek Hill’s soap opera.
-
I don’t think paying out 20mil gets us 20mil of production back Shari g balls with the two we already have and the QB we have throwing to them. I am trying to picture Legette outside of the Carolinas. Lol.
-
If you are joking ha ha, if serious I certainly didn’t mean to confuse you. Almost every single OL spot could be open in the next two seasons. C, both Ts and Hunt’s spot at 20 mil per season. All could turn over. We need bodies. Plenty of examples of tackles moving to guard in the NFL out of college. T drafted to be guards or failing at T in the NFL and being moved there. Andrew Whitworth played G multiple seasons before permanently switching to T.
-
I have been looking for a dropped pass list and all that comes up is QBs. And team stats. When I do receivers I get the passing stats for a handful that threw passes this year. I wanted to be accurate but anyhow I was looking because thought I remembered reading where T Mac had more drops than XL this year. One of you many smarter than me people here,I would appreciate it if you know how to pull that up, please do. Thank you. And yeah I know that isn’t all there is to it I just thought it was interesting. Of course what the hell is a drop lol.

I understand that some people want WR. I am solidly against using yet another high pick there. Coker is pretty good and we used No picks on him. What I think we really need at WR is a little bit of a Smitty lite. It is ridiculous to say let’s get a Smitty because you just can’t do that, but someone not tall and long striding but more in his mold. I think we’d have a pretty well rounded group. Looking at tackle, with replacing Moton looming, it just seems like the no brainer. You fill in Icky short term. Depending on how he recovers, and how the new guy plays, you go from there. A tackle at 19 is most likely either a LOT, a ROT, or a big talented guard, at worst. We will need all three in the next couple of years. I would love to have a stud ILB be there at 19 but the OL is the responsible thing to do I believe.

Should Dave Canalas be on the HOT seat??
strato replied to Jackson113.2's topic in Carolina Panthers
Bevell has been an interim HC for a few games in two different places, and that is the extent of his HC experience. But OC experience, play calling, scheming, he has that unquestionably. And that is where Canales has arguably been the weakest. The Seattle thing is what it is at this point. I am sure there is a downside and maybe that is, it might be a stale philosophy. The upside of it is the fit should be relatively seamless with them all drawing from the same well, terminology and philosophy wise. This is reminiscent of the Reich all star staff thing, except it isn’t a hodge podge of people drawn from diverse influences it has that ‘alignment’ thing going for it. (except lol, the little detail that they aren’t exactly all stars). I admit to being a fan of alignment, with everyone on the same page. It make a lot of sense to me. Whatever page you pick, get everyone on that same page. -
I don’t know what the team is thinking but I tend to agree on LOT. I have said before that it pushes the upgrades we hoped to make all down a rung on the priority ladder. It feels like… you have this great vacation planned and right before you are about to go, you lose your job. You still gonna take that vacation or are you going to pay bills?

Should Dave Canalas be on the HOT seat??

That’s why Bevell is a good move. Idzik might not be chopped liver, he is just inexperienced and even less ready to be the play caller than Canales. I still say the playbook is limited which is a hinderance to calling plays, I would imagine. Anyway Beavis lol… no Bevell, got to consecutive SBs as an OC and won one with 48 points or something. Should have won the second one. And had several more good years there. They were the team we had to learn how to beat it took us til the third year I think before we could go into Seattle and successfully compete. That is glass half full thinking, yep, but that is head and shoulders over what we have had here for a while. Certainly now. In addition.. It was Canales’ boss. He knew more then , I would bet he knows more now. I can’t look at this as anything but a potential positive thing. Hell he might be the guy that can look at Dave and say what the fug are you doing? And Dave will listen. I think I can hope for that. Maybe not. -

Yeah man. Here it is you are in January 2024. One coach run off over Bryce. Job is now open. You are a coach with interest from multiple teams. You look at Bryce’s 2023 performance, and maybe note Tepper’s volatility, what are you thinking? Scary situation or great opportunity? People should not lose sight of why we have a Dave Canales here. Getting any iind of decent results from him is a win. -

I think you might be selling Bevell a little short. He was with Miami working for one of the better offensive minds in the league which isn’t nothing. He is a better sounding board than Idzik I would bet. not arguing about the rest of it or Canales, just saying.
