Brandt needs to give more on QB prospects
LinvilleGorge replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
His arm is average for a P5 D1 QB. It's definitely below average at the NFL level. Don't get triggered, but it's probably on par with Teddy's -

Stop. His arm is absolutely not as strong as Burrow's and "running" also means throwing on the move - something Burrow does very well and Jones doesn't. Jones has shown he can throw to wide open elite targets who are head and shoulders better than the opposing defenders behind an elite OL that is also head and shoulders better than the opposing defenders. Good luck replicating that at the NFL level. When plays broke down at LSU, Burrow still made positive things happen. If the first read wasn't wide open at Alabama (a true rarity) the play was generally a dud. -
I don't expect us to target marquee names, but I do expect at least one OL starter and one secondary starter to be signed. And I mean legit starters, not some bum we shoehorn into a starting role because we hope he's better than what we currently have.

Geoff Schwartz's OL camp is happening

I'm a football nerd so I'm always down for this type of stuff. It makes sense too because everyone constantly needs OL. -

You can't possibly watch Burrow play at LSU in 2019 and try to compare Mac Jones in 2020 to him as an NFL prospect. The stats may match up well, but there's a massive gulf between the two in terms of physical traits. -
I'm still a little salty Chinn didn't get DROY!
LinvilleGorge replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
At some point in his third season Young will likely catch up to Chinn's tackle numbers as a rookie.- 23 replies

Yeah, I definitely understand why we opted for Turner > Norwell. Sucks Trai got fat and lazy and it sucks for the Jags that they overpaid for an average talent who works his ass off and played way over his head for a brief period on an elite IOL. Yeah, our OTs were trash, but Norwell/Kalil/Turner was a GREAT IOL. I'd still be interested in bringing Norwell back. He's a good OG. He's just not the elite OG the Jags paid him to be.

Excluding Deshaun Watson & Zach Wilson...
LinvilleGorge replied to davos's topic in Carolina Panthers
History says he'll be about the same. He just doesn't have the guts. He's a backup QB. He plays not to lose. That's the mentality you want in a backup. -
Chad Reuter’s mock has us taking Fields

Agreed. -

Yeah, I wouldn't hope too hard. Carr's worst year would be Teddy's best. Carr is just a lot better. -
Dan Snyder...what should they do with him
LinvilleGorge replied to ladypanther's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think the WFT should keep him forever. -

He did. But it was all about that offensive system. It was painfully dumbed down and simplified. My concern with Herbert was that may have been due to his abilities or perceived abilities by the staff. Turns out, that's just their offense and now their starting QB is transferring. Probably because he doesn't want to keep running a HS offense and wants to show the NFL he can do more while also preparing himself to actually do more. -

It's less about how the looked in college and more about how the traits and skills transfer to the NFL. When Fields has struggled in the games I've watched, it's when he has to come off of his first read. That's gonna be a problem in the NFL. If he can't develop the ability to go through a progression he's not a starting NFL QB. It's not necessarily a crushing indictment though. Herbert was the same story at Oregon. -

I honestly think Wilson is every bit the long shot than Watson, hell maybe even longer to be honest. I think the Jets are taking him. -
Hell, I'd be for signing him back if he was still the guy we drafted. At his best he was among the best guards in the league. Then he got paid and the waistline and body fat percentage grew with the paycheck.
-
Seemed like he got fat and lazy after he got paid.
-
Yep. Honestly, with our weapons in our system I think he'd be top 10 possibly flirting with top 5.
-
Tepper got gamed IMO. He probably pushed Ron for significant changes and got sold on this BS instead of firing Ron like he should've.
-
Yeah... I don't know about that. I've been pretty vocal that if Gruden dumbly decides to move on from Carr we should be all over that, but he's nowhere close to Russell Wilson IMO and I despise RW. I haven't seen anything from Carr to indicate that he's capable of MVP caliber play but I do think he's capable of consistent top 10 QB play in the right system and that's good enough IMO.
-
He just seems fake as fug. We have some mutual friends who went to HS with him who swear he's legit but he seems worse than ever after marrying that pop star.
-
I really don't care what our division rivals do. I already can't stand Russell Wilson so as far as I'm concerned he'd fit in perfectly in N.O.

Anybody remember when Colin Jones "asked" for his release?
LinvilleGorge replied to JABANOG's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don't celebrate the guy failing to find work, but I do hope the days of "core special teamers" are over in Carolina. If you're a liability on the field on your side of the ball be it offense or defense, you need to be replaced. It's not hard to find special teams gunners. I would make an exception for a truly elite return man, but I would bet on Joe Brady finding a way to utilize him on offense. -
If those players help keep our QB upright, fine.
-
I'd bet good money on us targeting at least one vet OL and DB. I'd prefer to target slot WR in the draft though. There are a lot of good looking mid-round prospects there. There's also an outside chance that Samuel won't have the market he expects. He may opt to sign a short term deal to hit the market again next year. If that's the case, IMO we'd be his best bet. Brady has shown to be adept at using him.

I'm still kinda dumbfounded that Oregon staff is THAT dumb. They treated him like he was the dumbest guy on the planet so I kinda had to assume he was. So many single reads, half field reads, and in crunch time they acted like the forward pass was no longer allowed. Morons.
