Everyone here knows I'm a huge UNC fan. Here are my concerns with Downs in terms of translating to the NFL: 1. He's going to be viewed as a slot only in the NFL. That really hurts his value. He did the majority of his damage in college in the slot. 2. Slight frame and injury prone. He didn't miss many games in college but he was often being hindered by nagging injuries. Hopefully that doesn't follow him to the NFL but it bears consideration. 3. Propensity to give up yards to try to gain yards. He'll run backwards after the catch quite often to try to gain space to make a move to beat guys to pickup YAC. It worked out more often than not at the college level but it may be a habit he'll need to break in the NFL. 4. Virtually no reps against press coverage. Everyone at the college level was afraid of getting beat deep in large part because Downs played with excellent deep ball throwing QBs so very few teams got up in his face and tried to press him. Given his small size I don't know how well he'd deal with it. I think he has the makings of a potentially very good NFL slot WR, but those guys generally max out at 2nd round value and are often to be had in the 3rd. That's why the potential 1st round talk kinda baffles me. He'd need some really jaw dropping workout measurables to make that happen IMO.

This is one where I would definitely trust our coaches to make the evaluation. There's ample film of Fields in the NFL, albeit without much help around him. If they like him better than any QB at #9 then be my guest.

I honestly don't think he did. I think we were going with an offensive minded HC no matter what. I mean, could Wilks' record honestly been expected to be any better than it was given the situation when he took over? I hope it at least aided him getting the Niners DC gig. Hopefully someone got something out of it.

Yep. It's why I honestly advocated for just sticking it out with Rhule through this season. He should've been fired after last year but Tepper wanted to give his chosen one another year. Once you make that decision just stick it out to collect your harvest. Had we done that we'd still have our same current staff but we'd be drafting in the top 5.

Jimmy G has played for two of the better franchises and better coaches in recent NFL memory. Carr has played for the Raiders. There's a reason why Carr will be the hottest veteran QB on the market this year and Jimmy G will be hoping for another opportunity to even compete for a starting job. FTR, if the plan is to draft a QB I wouldn't hate Jimmy G as a bridge/mentor.

I strongly disagree. A big issue with this franchise is that we have grossly overvalued relatively low value positions (RB and off the ball LBs) at the expense of premium positions. We've had a lot of good players at RB and LB but not a whole lot of wins and not a whole lot of talent at premium positions. Do the math.

Pretty much where I'm at. I'd greatly prefer a QB via the draft. I'm just nervous about that sitting at #9.

I think he's much more of a 5 year guy than a 10 year guy but I agree that he's young enough that if you acquire him for what he's going to get on the open market you need to fully commit to him.

Yeah, I think Carr is young enough and you're going to have to commit enough to him contract wise that if you sign him you need to go all in on putting the best team around him that you can. I like the WR depth in this class but I don't see any elite prospects. Go Mayer at #9 then best WR in round 2.

I think we're going to look into it as I'm pretty sure they realize that #9 might be too low to get the QB they might want in the draft and to trade up will prove very costly.

Well, if David Newton says it isn't likely Carr is probably literally putting ink to paper with the Panthers right now. LOL!

Because they have two guys on rookie contracts. One just played pretty well and the other they traded a ton to move up to draft. If I was them I'd have the same plan they likely have - go into camp and let them battle it out.
