I guarantee he is negotiating based on Surtain's deal. I am a Gamecock fan, so not a hater at all-- Understand that I was born in Columbia when my father played for the Gamecocks--and I have been against nearly every pick. Travelle Wharton (I spoke to him every year at OTAs--great guy) is my favorite. Why was I against Horn? I wanted Surtain and I despised his father.

Mike Garafolo: Panthers are in on DK Metcalf trade
MHS831 replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Canales likes the deep ball. Stretching the defense probably helped Bryce as much as anything. -
He must have had some great pics of the owner with a freakish carnival worker or something. 8 years?
-
People who do not like Tremble are focusing on his receiving--the least impressive aspect of his arsenal. Not blocking, not special teams. He is probably getting paid market.
-
I was under the impression that it did not end well. Of course, there's always Matt Millen. As President and GM/President, he was a combined 31-97-0.
-
Elway had some good days too.
-
He is 36. In a rather limited number of plays, got 32 pressures--more than 10% of snaps. That is strong. However,This is not what we need. Carolina is not where Edge players go to retire.
-
Myles Garrett no longer available for trade. Got paid $123+ m guaranteed. Crosby's deal has the edge players frothing at the mouth. Sorry Juan--did not open your link before posting

My father was an all-ACC and preseason All-American tight end at South Carolina when I was in the womb. He tried coaching high school and Pop Warner, and he realized something. It is difficult for someone who has skills that came naturally to teach others who do not have that natural ability how to develop that skill. He said, "That is probably why the greatest athletes are not the greatest coaches. You can't describe how to achieve something that came naturally." I found, as an educator, that the best teachers are often the worst mentors for new or weak teachers for the same reason. I wonder if this applies to GM work? I did not like the hire (Morgan) for that reason. At least we can say this: Our GM is not a former sports writer or minor league baseball player. I am waiting to see if Morgan develops a pattern. Last year, if you consider the round, I think his best two picks were Wallace and Smith-Wade--defensive players. However, Morgan was a 4-3 MLB and we are in the 3-4, a different animal for LBs--at least in theory.

That should count for 2 TDs. His hands were bad coming out of college--and they have improved. I was a TE in college, and to me, the toughest catches were the ones that were coming straight towards you. I would rather catch running and looking over one shoulder when you have a dominant hand in the process. In fairness, others liked catching passes with their thumbs together in their chest. I dunno.
-
Let's say we draft Mason Taylor in the third round. We have a very solid TE group, imo, young as hell, at a cost to the taxpayers of about $10m or less for 2025. Tremble is your blocking TE. Sanders is your pass catcher with upside Taylor is your all around TE starter with upside out the arse. Big picture, I see it.
-
How would you compare Ertz's blocking to Tremble? Ertz had a rep for being a weak blocker coming out of college. He has improved, but is he equal to Tremble? I don't know the answer. However, I know that when you evaluate TEs, receiving is only part of the equation. Tremble is a good lead blocker and is very effective blocking in space. Since his receiving is improving and he is 24, I like this contract the more I think about it. Tremble had only 249 yards or so, but he was targeted only 29 times. That can be that he was in on running plays for the most part. It can be QB confidence in you. It can be that you weren't open---but he grabbed 23 of them. That is nearly 80% of targets (a good percentage for NFL TEs is 70% and above, with the elite TEs often surpassing 80% of targets. By the way--who is the person catching Bryce's "walk off" pass? I can't see his number? A: TT, baby.

I guess my next question goes to Kungfoodude: I assume you dabble in the martial arts to some degree, or you like Jackie Chan movies, but I understand that in grappling, you can choke someone out, causing them to lose consciousness at times. While Karate may be consensual and that eliminates any type of assault charges, have you ever seen it get heated and a choke hold was employed, in your estimation, crossing the line? Could that result in legal action? Just curious.

I watch a lot of crime and detective murder mysteries, so I consider myself an expert. My wife is nervous because she sees me watching these all the time; it gives me leverage. Seriously, you are right--any gesture during an altercation that demonstrates non-defensive, life-threatening actions can get you attempted murder charges. While it can be a misdemeanor (depending on circumstances in some states), it is a gesture that does not require physical evidence to prove in court, so you are really going to need a good attorney and a Chiefs fan club jury. This is what AI tells me, and it is NEVER WRONG: Section 22.01 of the Texas Penal Code This charge is also referred to as Assault by Strangulation. Whereas a Class A misdemeanor might only result in one year in jail, a conviction on assault charges that involve strangulation, choking, or suffocation is a felony offense that carries a much longer prison sentence.

Aussie, I have an idea that the Panthers will sign a DL and S early in free agency. I also have a feeling that those deals are expensive and already in place to be announced Monday AM. FWIW, my phone has not been ringing, so it looks as if another year as a free agent will come and go. I am starting to think it is due to my age (over 50), limited college experience as a backup, injury history, skill level, physical inferiority, and anonymity. But you never know.

I think they are going to let BC and Jackson hit the market and hope they return home humbled and ready to negotiate a new deal. As for Horn, I am not yet drinking his Kool Aid. I know that he is a talented CB, and I know that we are paying for future production and not past performance, but paying him is more of a gamble than it should be. If he is unwilling to take an incentives-based contract, I would not consider paying him top dollar. Heck, if we get better at DT and edge, an average CB becomes a good CB.
-
Initially, I did not like the deal, but if he reaches his incentives, it probably means that he is well worth $8m per season. If he doesn't, he costs the team up to $10m. I noticed that Tremble got better when Bryce got better. Coincidence? Tremble has not arrived as an NFL TE, but he has shown flashes and he does things that don't project well in the stats or on TV. While he only had 234 yards receiving in 2024, he caught 23 of the 29 passes he was targeted. He is 24 years old. He turns 25 in June. Overall, Morgan is securing familiar faces that have demonstrated upside or were smart moves. I think his moves have been very frugal and smart. Keeping young guys or guys and not throwing away money in voidable years (dead cap) when he can get something for that money). 1. Corbett: We recently had a thread on Corbett and why cutting him would have cost the Panthers over $7m in dead cap (he had voidable payouts of $7m in 2025 and about $3m in 2026. ) I am guessing that they may have combined those two payments (in which we would have gotten nothing in return) and signed him to a 1-year deal worth $10m. At the age of 30, he may still have something in the tank, but if that is what we did, we turned dead cap money into a year of service from an established player at the back end of his prime. Until the details come out I have to reserve a conclusive approval, but it sounds smart. C? The draft sucks at C. We have 2 who can play other positions on the OL. Win Win, if you ask me based on what I know and assume. 2. Mays: At $3m or so, he is worth it. Played well down the stretch last year. Got better each game. Both our centers were guards turned C, so there was a steep learning curve. I assume Corbett would not have agreed to the 1 year deal if he was not told he'd be the starter, but Mays has played better and will win the job again. Long term, he will, in my view, be the Center of the Panthers for the next 4-5 years. 3. Tremble: Signing Tremble does not mean that we are not drafting a TE, but I think it means we are less likely to draft a TE. I am guessing that they like Sanders' upside and Tremble is only 24 and was improved in 2024. I noticed his hands had improved. He is tough and blocks much better than Sanders. In a perfect world, we draft a TE, but if we can't, special teams ace Franks could become the #3 TE. Is that ideal? No, but the Panthers need 8 starters and two essential depth pieces if you do not include K. By securing Mays and Corbett, you still need 9 starters (or key rotational players. (DE, DT/NT, Edge, CB, S, S, WR, LB) Key depth (RB, RT). Would we love a TE weapon? Yes, but let's see what Sanders and Tremble can do and lets see if Morgan is done at TE. Remember, Thomas' spot is possibly open. I am guessing that is all we can say moving into free agency. The fact that Horn is still in his last year is not alarming but it is interesting. To be honest, it kinda pisses me off that he is asking for top CB money. I think he holds too much and he has been out for half his first contract. That is not elite. (I have not spent any time looking into details, so this is uninformed ranting at this time). Morgan is keeping his young core and being smart and frugal, if you ask me. So far, he has not traded for what might be there in free agency or the draft. He has not kicked the can down the road by reworking Moton's deal or desperately paying Horn in Hurney-like fashion. He is doing what is best for the long-term--I like it, so far.

Panthers Prospect Visits/Meetings (Final Update-4/22)

If they do not stack the defensive front...I am going to give Morgan the benefit of the doubt one more year. $10 bucks says at least one of the names you mentioned here is a Panther in May. -

I think we get a DL, WR, S in free agency for sure. I think they are going to let Mike Jackson shop himself. -
You could argue that last season, we had Coker, AT, XL, and Moore after loosing our #1. Our best TE was a rookie fourth rounder. Bryce's last 9 games were impressive. KC, Philly games we could have won with a defense. The Panthers were 4-5 and could have been 6-3 down the stretch--with no true #1. We will add a WR or two somehow. I am encouraged that Morgan is not kicking the can down the road by extending contracts. He is trying to keep the core together. Corbett was a smart move. Tremble, with Sanders and a new TE, could be a decent group. So it seems that a RB, TE, RT, and WR are left. I am guessing the T and RB will be drafted; it seems to be the best place to get them.

I agree. !
