After 1 day of FA, do you feel better about the defense?

How are the 49ers not at the bottom??? -
Last season: I did not like drafting XL, Brooks, but we did not have a first rounder, so I give him a good grade for Wallace (who was below average as a starter, imo). I liked the TE Sanders--good value in the fourth. Smith-Wade seems to be a good pick for a late CB. In free agency, he overpaid two guards, imo, but it worked. To me, overpaying suggests that you have a complex and need money to convince a player to come to Carolina. You want players to come here because we win, not because we overpay. Motivation is important. I think Morgan and company did not have a good year. I give them a D+. This year, in free agency, I hate the contract they gave Horn. He has not earned it--full stop. I would have traded him for a third rounder before paying that. He is not Darrell Revis. He is not Deion Sanders I get that he is trying to develop a core and not ship it when key first rounders hit their primes--Burns, CMC, and Horn, for example. So this year, we started off with the same insecurity we had in 2024. After locking up Tremble, Mays (sorta), and Corbett (all good moves that may not have had too many other options), he jumped back into free agency and went after Milton Williams, willing to pay him $100m, giving the Panthers four $100m players (Hunt, Brown, Horn, and now Milton). It is best to give huge contracts in house and not to free agents--yet 2 or our 4 would have been free agents chasing a huge payday. Fortunately, the Patriots bailed out Morgan. He then does well, his best signing of the day, grabbing Bobby Brown and Tershawn Wharton--a run stuffing NT and a pass-rushing DE (which is what Milton is) for less money than Milton was paid to sign with New England. Moehrig (SS) will become a huge fan favorite on the defense and he was paid well. Pat Jones (Edge) is basically Wonnum II right now, but with reason to think his upside is higher. Not a bad signing at $10m per. In relation to the draft, Morgan is a former player and a lot of them have a lower expectation from rookies than you or I do. I think he addressed the issues at IDL, with room for another addition in the draft. I am not confident that he addressed areas of need that are not deep in the draft, like WR. We still need a FS, and the FS position is not that deep. He did not address LB, which might suggest they target Walker. He did not address WR, which might suggest that he feels XL will improve. I am not satisfied that Edge has been addressed completely. So is he setting himself up to find quality players in need areas that are deep in the draft? We drafted 2 IDL and an Edge. They are plentiful in the draft. Did he overpay for CB when that $25m could have been used to find 2 CBs with better track records? To answer the question, I like Morgan's aggression. I like the fact that he determined the biggest need -- run defense--and he brought it a bunch of players who are really strong in run support. Moehrig, Jones, and Brown are run stuffers. Horn and Jackson are solid vs, the run. Until we get a solid free safety and pass rushing edge, I will worry about the pass defense. So far, I am going to give Morgan a C+. A C, but a + for signing all younger free agents. If we add a free safety and/or a stud WR I will raise his grade. If I were reading tea leaves, I would say that we are not counting on Graham being there, so we are going to target a WR or Jalon Walker. If we do nothing at WR before the draft, he could be in position where he feels that he has to draft a WR in the first round. It seems, however, that most obvious "tell" is that he has not signed an ILB or an edge who can get to the passer. All signs point to Jalen Walker. If he takes Walker, I see his strategy. It makes sense, in a weird way.

I think he had a roster bonus coming up. Someone posted yesterday that he was asked to take a cut to stay. I am guessing a Shy Tuttle offer, and he must have refused.
-
I am hoping the Panthers sign this free safety: Julian Blackmon (Colts)
-
Brissett is the quintessential backup QB to me--gets the job done. Heinicke is my second choice. Mac Jones? If you want someone to compete more than mentor.
-
I think Jones will win the job. NY was a horrible situation.
-
I think Jones will ball out.

No, I am with you--which is why I was using past tense. Now that you have Darnold, if you want to keep your job.... I think he went to Seattle to end his career--congrats for getting a payday, but Minnesota has a knack for making mediocre QBs look good. If Seattle think Darnold is going to make plays when things break down, it will be a long season. Shedeur Sanders is awesome with a clean pocket, but when he gets pressure (like other QBs) it usually does not end well. I think Darnold had clean pockets at USC, and in NY, it was a different world. Sanders will need to be protected as well. I think I would evaluate QBs based on how they play under pressure. Josh Allen was in Wyoming and did not have a lot of protection and weaponry. They said he had accuracy issues, comparing him to QBs who routinely had 4 seconds.

The Wharton signing was the only head scratcher for me yesterday, after Horn. If you put Wharton and Brown together, however, you fill 2 needs for less money that Milton. Milton was weaker vs the run than Wharton, but I thought Wharton was a bit pricey. You don't take a guy who missed half his games on rookie deal and make him the highest paid player in the league at CB--I would have offered incentives, but not guaranteed money--and maybe they did but could not get it done without giving in. My favorite signing? Bobby Brown--playing Tuttle at NT last year made me question his coaching ability. Brown is a one-trick pony, but he does that trick very well. I think we are all going to love Moehrig at SS. The Mike Jackson deal was a relief. But pay more attention to the Pat Jones (Edge) addition. A two year deal for $10m per season, Jones was a rotational player and had 6.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss and 12 QB hits--as a part time player. He is 26 and has a quick take off--in Panther history, there is a tradition of edge rushers developing late in their rookie deals. Charles Johnson, for example. Greg Hardy. I think it is possible that Jones is breaking out. If we get him for 10m per season for 2 years, that is great.

I am the Seattle GM. I have seen what Darnold does when he is not protected and what he can do when he has a pocket. Darnold is 27. I build the best OL in the NFL. I bring in some WRs. I do not put him on the field with substandard protection or weaponry. You could have a QB for the next 8-10 years if you stack the deck.
-
Geno. The Raider OL is pretty good and they have a pretty good TE and pretty good (underrated) WRs. But I would not rule out Fields--Id run a lot of pistol, R/P option, and build the OL. He will need weapons.

I think he will have to compete. I would still draft a DE (3-4) on day 3--there is some talent that deep. -

I understand that he is a good locker room guy, but not a good football field guy. He has a history of playing better, but he sucked last year. In fact, his pay should not be cut--he should have to buy a ticket. -
Not sure where this is coming from---we will be able to pay a LT if he has earned it. Nobody knows the cap situation in 2 years. Core players get re-signed. Our $150m guards will be ending their deals and over 30. Restructure, cut, etc.
-
Easy to draft him too
-
A stud RT who is great at pass pro. All day long in the third
-
It is leaning to the offense in the draft now. If we don't sign a WR this week, how do you pass on TMac?
-
what have you heard about him eyeing Stewart?
-
Prioritized Needs: Free Safety Wide Receiver Linebacker Edge Secondary Needs: Right Tackle (very important secondary need) Tight End (This could be a primary need, depending on perspective) Running Back (Sanders might agree to a pay cut, stay tuned) Corner (It is possible that Evans and/or Bartholomew earned a depth spot at the end of the season. Both were good down the stretch) Defensive End (3-4) Inside Linebacker That is how I see it---

They called us losers when we missed out on the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes a few years ago too. These turds don't know crap. Neither do we. But i feel good about today.

I guess depth behind Brown (NT). He was terrible last year--and I am assuming that the pay cut does not make him immune from being cut.
-
Yeah Brown is a better fit to meet our biggest need. Wharton can come in and rush the passer--7 sacks? Pretty solid.

We are keeping Tuttle?
