3/1 Gameday Thread: Canes @ Detroit- Puck Drop 7:30PM
Anybodyhome replied to Anybodyhome's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Detroit is skating well, like they always do with Carolina. This will be a hard fought game either way. Canes had many grade A chances -
After missing the Sunday afternoon tilt with the Edmonton Oilers (Connor McWho? Leon Drysocket?) because I was driving home from Beaufort (NC, not SC), I'm in tonight. Feels like the Canes are ramping it up again, just in time for a 16-game month which includes 4 back-to-back sets (3-4, 12-13, 17-18, 28-29). Don't look past tonight with Washington on tap for Thursday. Just take care of business against the pesky Wings and deal with the Caps when the time comes. Can't say I'm happy with the line changes. Concerned that Jarvis, who's looked a little off lately, will get tested physically. THE QUICK HITS: Last Time Out: Yet another exceptional performance from Frederik Andersen backed the Canes to a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. Two beautiful passing plays paved the way to a pair of first period goals and from there the netminder was able to carry the crew the rest of the way. Leon Draisaitl was held without a shot on goal for Edmonton and for the second time this year both he and Connor McDavid were held without a point. Extra Turbo Boost: Teuvo Teravainen moved his current point streak to eight games in the win over Edmonton, now recording 11 points since February 10 in Boston. It is the longest point streak by any Hurricane this season. Dynamic Duo On The Cusp Of Making New History: In the six most recent games of Teravainen's streak, he and Sebastian Aho have connected for a goal in each of them. They have now accomplished the feat 171 times in their NHL/Hurricanes careers, and they are just one such goal away from passing Kevin Dineen and Ron Francis (1984-91, 1998-99: 171) for the most goal combinations by any duo in franchise history. At Home On The Road: Carolina enters tonight's contest 18-7-2 on the road. The 18 wins away from home are tied with Pittsburgh for the most by any team in the NHL. Worth Remembering: The Canes are 28-3-3 when scoring first. Don't Sleep On Detroit: Despite them being on the outside looking in right now in terms of the playoffs, the Wings have points in 18 of their 29 home games. Their leading point scorer, Dylan Larkin, also enters tonight on a nine-game point streak (6 G, 11). ADDITIONAL NOTES: Milestone Watch: Derek Stepan is one point shy of 500 for his NHL career. What Are We Wearing?: The team will be wearing their white sweaters tonight. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DETROIT, MI. - Antti Raanta is set to make his 13th start of the year Tuesday, as the Carolina Hurricanes take on the Detroit Red Wings. Raanta is 7-3-1 this season and coming off of a win in his last outing. Raanta got the start in Pittsburgh on Sunday, February 20, recording 31 saves on 34 shots to earn his 100th career National Hockey League victory. The 18 skaters in front of him will remain the same as the team's most recent win, although some minor changes will take place within the group. Most notably, Jordan Martinook jumps up to the second line alongside Vincent Trocheck and Martin Necas. Martinook led all Hurricanes with six shots on goal during the team's 50-shot effort against Columbus on Friday and then was visibly active during the team's victory over Edmonton on Sunday. To compensate, Seth Jarvis will move down to the fourth line with Steven Lorentz and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Forwards: Svechnikov - Aho - Teravainen Martinook - Trocheck - Necas Niederreiter - Staal - Fast Lorentz - Kotkaniemi - Jarvis Defensemen: Slavin - Bear Skjei - Pesce Cole - Chatfield Starting Goalie: Raanta Injuries: Tony DeAngelo Brendan Smith Scratches: Derek Stepan

That fugging blows. But, if you like, send me your resume and I'd be happy to distribute it. Are you willing to relocate? Commute distance? Thrown in some particulars and I probably can get you some contacts at least.

I was traveling today and missed the game. Will catch highlights.

2/25 Game Thread: Blue Jackets @ Canes- Puck Drop 7PM
Anybodyhome replied to Anybodyhome's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Skjei and Chatfield, Cole and Bear. Both of those lines got more ice time than Slavin and Pesce and played very well. There were a couple breakaway opportunities that Chatfield stopped and Bear broke up a 3-on-1. "Holding their own" is not really a fair description- they played really well. Chatfield got his face smashed in Chicago a couple weeks ago and hadn't played in 14 days. There was some concern he'd not be ready to skate and maybe a little apprehensive with the major injury, but he came out strong. -

Thru 2 the BJs are held to less than 10 shots. Canes keeping it in the O-zone a lot, 36 shots to 9. This Berube guy in net for Columbus is playing out of his mind. 2-0 Carolina. Staal scored on his 4th shot attempt on the same play! Turbo off the draw, cannon over the glove-side shoulder from the far dot. -
Blue line needs to step up big the next few games. Smith and TDA out against a hot Columbus team who beat up Florida lat night. That may be the difference -maker as Carolina has been off most of the week while the Blue Jackets are on a back-to-back after Florida last night. Tonight may be a game to watch like a GM- does the team's performance tonite tell me I need to go find a rental blue-liner for the rest of the season? Am I willing to give up a Martinook, Lorentz or a bigger name and a draft pick? Last Time Out: The Canes played the second half of a back-to-back Monday in Philadelphia, squeaking out a 4-3 overtime victory over the Flyers. It was also the team's fourth game in six days and while they went on to take seven out of the possible eight points, it was visible that by the end of the affair that there was very little gas left in the tank for the crew. Brett Pesce played the role of overtime hero, in a contest in which he and the rest of the blue line logged heavy minutes after Tony DeAngelo left due to injury. No DeAngelo or Smith: 24 hours before DeAngelo left injured, Brendan Smith also left Sunday's battle against Pittsburgh after taking a shot to the head. Both are expected to be "out a while" according to Rod Brind'Amour, sharing the update Thursday afternoon. The door now opens for Jalen Chatfield, who is expected to draw in tonight. While this leaves the team with just six healthy defenseman, it also gives a big opportunity to both Chatfield, and Ethan Bear, who had been in and out of the lineup despite being healthy. Go For Four: The team took victories over both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in consecutive days, coming following a 4-3 victory over Nashville at home last Friday. Their recent 3-0-1 stretch is very welcomed after going 1-2-1 to start the post-All-Star break schedule with a same 'four games in six days' situation. Tonight they'll go for their fourth victory in a row, in their 51st game of the season. Turbo, Fuego: Teuvo Teravainen enters tonight's contest with points in six straight contests. Dating back to February 10 against Boston, #86 has two goals and six assists. Dynamic Duo On The Cusp Of History: In the four most recent games of Teravainen's streak, he and Sebastian Aho have connected for a goal in each of them. They have now accomplished the feat 169 times in their NHL/Hurricanes careers, and they are just two such goals away from tying Kevin Dineen and Ron Francis (1984-91, 1998-99: 171) for the most goal combinations by any duo in franchise history. Columbus On A Run: While they sit on the outside looking in right now in terms of the playoff picture, Columbus has won seven of their eight games since the All-Star break. They've been hot even since before then, winning nine of their last 11. Additionally, they come to town having beaten a top 10 NHL team twice in the last three days - Florida, last night and Toronto on Monday. Forwards: Svechnikov - Aho - Teravainen Jarvis - Trocheck - Necas Niederreiter - Staal - Fast Lorentz - Kotkaniemi - Martinook Defensemen: Slavin - Pesce Skjei - Chatfield Cole - Bear Starting Goalie: Andersen

Couldn't be more spot on with that assessment. I really thought he was going to be just another role player on the team while adding some real sandpaper on the blue line. I was wrong and it didn't take long to realize it. I'm really blown away by every aspect of his game. He's made very few mistakes on the ice and he really does play the game the right way. I'm hoping RBA wants to keep him and convinces Waddell to sign him for a few years. I'd be very happy to see him wearing a Canes sweater for a few years.

I've heard 2 names: Klinsberg and Giordana. Only in the last few days has Seattle GM Ron Francis stated he'll likely move the 38-year old captain before the 3/21 deadline. But TDA will probably be back before then. Klinsberg is available right now, but Toronto just passed when Dallas wanted a top prospect and a 1st rounder and he's carrying a $4.25M cap number.

Being reported Tony D has a midsection injury that will sideline him for about a month. Meanwhile Jalen Chatfield is on the roster.

Pesce with the most TOI in his career and playing w/4 defenseman the last 6 minutes of regulation still has gas in the tank! -

Philly has nothing to lose and they're playing loose and are well aware the Canes just played 24 hours ago. -

Looked a lot worse because the player's head hit his teammate's and snapped back. Nonetheless, refs got their eyes on Svech. -

Svech with another penalty. Fug... the guy can play physical, but he's gotta earn how to do it within the rules. First 3 PKs yesterday, the Canes allowed ZERO shots on goal. -
I don't know about you guys, but I'm working today.... 3PM!?!? Last Time Out: The Canes claimed sole possession of the Metropolitan Division Sunday, holding on for a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Carolina scored exactly nine seconds into both the second and third periods, becoming the first team in NHL history to do so. Antti Raanta made 31 saves on the way to his 100th National Hockey League win. Freddie In Philly: After Raanta got the start Sunday in the Steel City, it would appear that Frederik Andersen will be in the visitors net this afternoon. Post-game Brind'Amour cited it as a way for his All-Star netminder to get an extra day of rest, after he made 28 stops on 31 shots in Friday's win over Nashville. Banged Up Bodies: Speaking of the victory over Nashville, in that game it was Seth Jarvis who entered as questionable with a lower-body injury. He would go on to play. Sunday in Pittsburgh it was Vincent Trocheck who was a game-time decision with an upper-body injury. He, too, would go on to play. Today the status of Brendan Smith remains up in the air after he left Sunday's victory with an upper-body injury. "Smitty" blocked a shot up high, ending his night after just 2:51 of ice time. Good On The Road: The Canes are 17-7-2 away from PNC Arena this season. 17 wins in that department ties them with Pittsburgh for the most in the NHL. Take Advantage, Turbo: With an assist on Sebastian Aho's power play goal Sunday afternoon, Teuvo Teravainen now has points in five straight games. In addition to producing the last few contests, #86 also has power play setups in eight of his last ten games played. Finish Strong: This is the Canes eighth of 14 back-to-back sets this season. While they're now 6-1-1 in the opening half, they're a much more average 3-3-1 so far in game number twos. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Milestone Watch: Derek Stepan is one point shy of 500 for his NHL career. Teravainen needs one more point for 300 as a member of the organization. What Are We Wearing?: The team will be wearing their white sweaters today. -------------------------------------- Smith took that shot right behind his ear hole and he may miss a couple games. Although I've not seen anything to suggest it, he may be in concussion protocol too. Getting hit like that can mess with the inner ear and cause some equilibrium problems. Hope he's okay.

Too many empty net icing calls. Giving teams an offensive zone face-off with a .an-advantage. I know RBA says he has no problem with it, but come on. A man down, O-zone face-off and you can't change. Given up 3 goals in the last 2 games as a result. -

That's probably game. Raanta will probably give up 2-3 in the third because Carolina can't keep the puck out of the D zone.
