Canes Off-Season: Speculate at Will
Anybodyhome replied to Anybodyhome's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Apologies, I didn't start the thread as a harbinger of bad things to come (no pun intended). I just thought it would be nice to have other relevant hockey conversations besides the games themselves. And, playoff hockey tends to let you see who you really have come game day. Who steps up to the mic and who shrinks under the glare of the spotlight? Who made a name for themselves and is looking to parlay that into a big payday? Who didn't gain the confidence of the coach to be part of the lineup this time around? You guys know what's up- hell, I thought this was a 3-1 series by now... lol. Not counting the boys out. -
So, here's my thoughts on who stays and who doesn't: Not here next season: Trocheck, Stepan, Cole, Smith (all UFA) Staying with new deals: Nino, Domi (both UFA) Which RFAs will not get an offer? Lorentz and LaFontaine Which RFAs stay? Bear, DeAngelo And who's the wildcard? Martin Necas, a 23-year old, RFA.

Yeah, I didn't put that correctly. I would assume KK gets the second line while Domi takes over the 4.

I think RBA has been a lot more patient with #88 than anyone might have expected. He took a seat earlier in the year for a few games because he wasn't producing and RBA has plugged him in with a wide variety of line combinations trying to find something that would help get him off the parked bus. Nothing has worked. Necas is an RFA at the end of the season and his year doesn't help his situation any. I don't think it matters a lot since I have to believe Vinny will leave and get paid handsomely and Domi will likely take the middle of that line with a new contract.

Boston's 9 goals in 2 games, including 4 PP and 1 shorty. In both games Boston won, their top line scored all the goals.

The Panthers have the best PK in the league, but you can't expect them to work miracles when they're doing it for 20 minutes a game. The Canes fell yesterday because they lost discipline and let an inferior team get into their heads. The Bruins are crippled defensively and have a single line that can score against the Canes on home ice, thanks to the last change rule. That changes dramatically when they come back to Raleigh. My biggest concern, though, is the inability to get pucks to the net when they're missing their 2 best D-men in McAvoy and Lindholm. Had the Canes played smart and stayed out of the box yesterday, they would have won the game.

Not nervous so much as disappointed when neither Boston, Rangers or Pittsburgh are nearly as good as the Canes. -

I thought the interference was pretty obvious, but with Carolina very rarely getting a call their way, I'd be very careful about challenging. -

They're not going to knock off Aho's second minor either. They'll say the clock was okay and give Boston what they want. -

Until the PP makes Boston pay, they can continue to take cheap shot penalties. -

McAvoy and Lindholm out for Bs today. Their 2 best D-men. Carolina has to take advantage big time. -

I've been around here for many years now and I can tell you there will always be people who annoy and upset the balance or simply cannot find the upside to anything. That being said, we have a choice to not read, respond, quote or otherwise exacerbate the situation. Hockey fans are not of the same ilk as football fans, particularly when it comes to being a fan of a football team who has enjoyed very limited success and a hockey team whose continued success is starting to gather more fans. The 2 sports are far from identical in many respects aside from the game itself. Therre are far fewer rules in hockey, but so much more nuance, so much more than just getting it done on the field or the ice. Not every hockey game in the regular season is a must win. In football, it is. In football, teams can screw with the cap in an effort to build a franchise. In hockey, it's a hard cap and it requires coaching, scouting and a minor league pipeline. There is so much different in the 2, but we shouldn't be surprised this forum would attract a few football fans who aren't familiar with that nuance and don't understand that everything doesn't have to be perfect to be successful year in and year out. As I said, we have a choice as to whom we follow, read and respond to. There is an ignore feature and I use it when I need to. -

Canes not playing their game tonight. They just need to steal 1 road game and they'll be okay. -

Projected lines: Interesting to note that Raanta is not listed on the injured list, so he'll be on the bench tonight while Kochetkov starts. Everything else remains the same: Forwards: Svechnikov - Aho - Jarvis Domi - Trocheck - Teravainen Niederreiter - Staal - Fast Martinook - Kotkaniemi - Necas Defensemen: Slavin - DeAngelo Skjei - Pesce Smith - Cole Starting Goalie: Kochetkov Injuries: Frederik Andersen Scratches: Ethan Bear Steven Lorentz Derek Stepan -
But Pastrnak still gets nothing for running over Raanta. https://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/bruins-brad-marchand-derek-forbort-fined-5000-each-after-game-2-of-nhl-playoff-series-against-hurricanes/ The NHL fined Boston Bruins players Brad Marchand and Derek Forbort $5,000 each for incidents that occurred during Game 2 of their first-round playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes, the league announced Thursday. Those $5,000 fines are the highest allowed under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement. Marchand's incident occurred as he was heading to the goal with a little over two minutes left in the second period. The four-time All-Star had two defenders on him, but he managed to hit the puck past one of them and toward the goal. The shot attempt was saved by Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, though. After Kochetkov made the save, Marchand hit him on the chest with his stick and began skating toward the puck again. Kochetkov then made contact with Marchand, making him stop. They were both visibly upset, but an official got in between them before it escalated to much more. Both players received minor penalties for slashing. The second incident occurred in the third quarter at the 2:53 mark. Forbort swung his stick and hit Carolina forward Teuvo Teravainen in the face while making a pass to defenseman Tony DeAngelo. Forbort then received a four-minute double-minor penalty for high-sticking.

I think Berg is retiring. He looked absolutely done last night. Even after he scored he didn't look he was having any fun.
