Carolina Panthers

– QB Cam Newton (+8.0) earned his best grade of the season, finishing with 380 combined passing and rushing yards. Newton was 10 of 14 for 154 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 147 QB Rating under pressure, and was nearly perfect after an early interception to Saints CB Delvin Breaux. This game did nothing but strengthen Newton’s case for NFL MVP, especially after his game-winning 75-yard touchdown drive (63 passing yards, 7 rushing yards) that kept the Panthers undefeated.

– All four of Carolina’s starting defensive linemen earned positive grades in this game, led by veteran DE Charles Johnson (+2.3). The team combined for a +6.0 pass rushing grade, and DT Kawann Short recorded six total pressures. Short has been dominant both as a pass rusher and in run defense this season, and currently ranks 5th of 67 qualifying NFL defensive tackles with a +34.6 overall grade.

– HB Jonathan Stewart (+0.5) made the best of the mediocre run blocking in front of him (-3.4 team run blocking grade), forcing six missed tackles and earning 54 of his 82 rushing yards after contact. Led by Stewart and Newton, the Panthers totaled 175 rushing yards at 5.1 yards per carry, even though the Saints’ front seven consistently won their matchups against Carolina’s offensive line.

Top performers:

QB Cam Newton (+8.0)
DE Charles Johnson (+2.3)
DT Kawann Short (+2.1)
DE Jared Allen (+1.8)
LB Thomas Davis (+1.5)

It's a bit odd to me.  Using the "eye test" I didn't think our pass rush was too strong yesterday, By contrast, our run game seemed pretty good and I noticed some good blocking at times, though maybe not consistently.  But I'm no expert...

Gonna miss Tom Sorenson when he retires from the Observer in a few days.  He has written a great article which captures yesterday's game well.

Here's my favorite section:

“We know what it’s like to be on the other side and scratch and claw,” Kalil said. “You’re fighting for your job, for next year, for continuity. It’s not like college football. Teams don’t just lay down. Somebody once told me there’s no bad NFL teams, only better ones, and I’m a firm believer in that.”

The Saints led 38-34 with 2:09 remaining. These fans were as loud as they had been all afternoon, the noise reverberating throughout the dome. The Panthers had the ball on the Saints’ 46; it was fourth down and 4. If they fail to make the play, they likely fail to win.

To put them in position to win the game and sustain their winning streak, Newton had to make a play with his legs that few quarterbacks can, and Greg Olsen had to make a play with his hands that few receivers can.

Newton rolled left away from the Saints’ rush. In the Dome it looked like an ambush – as if 15 to 25 Saints were chasing the quarterback. Newton rolled and ran and just before he went down, he flicked a pass to Greg Olsen, who grabbed the ball on the Saints’ 30 just before it hit the turf.

Special moments... That 4th down conversion to keep the drive alive and eventually seal the game so late in the 4th quarter will go down as one of the top 5 plays for the team this season.  Along with Olsen's catch against Seattle.  Norman's interception against the Saints...  etc.

With yesterday's great yardage stats, Cam really could be on a pace to break Peyton Manning's record of most yards amassed in the 1st 5 seasons by a QB.

Cam is currently in 2nd

Most combined yds rush & pass, 1st 5 seasons:

1. P.Manning - 21,174

2.  Cam Newton as of week 12 - 19,890

          Wk 13:  49 rushing / 331 passing = 380

Total:  20,270  needs 905 yards in 4 games to break Manning's record!

3. M.Ryan - 19,457

4. D.Marino - 19,428

In his past 3 games against the Saints, Greg Olsen has been targeted 34 times, grabbing 27 for 335 yds & 3 TDs.

Related to last tweet: In his past 3 games vs. Saints, Cam Newton totaled 872 passing yds while accounting for 12 TDs & 1 turnover.

This is posted in a dedicated thread, but it deserves a link here.  Rich Eisen's commentary about Cam as an MVP candidate and the overall excellence of the Panthers is a FANTASTIC listen.  It's about 4 1/2 minutes.  Well worth your time.  Get pumped Panthers fans!  We're winning the hearts of football lovers around the country.

Quick note / question.

I've got a ton of stats I'd love to post, but finding time is going to be tricky this week.  I should have a few hours free this evening.

Do any of y'all have preferences as to what stats you'd like updates on this week?

As time permtis I was planning on updating:

  • Red Zone scoring
  • 1st downs (including rushing % / passing % / penalty %)
  • 3rd & 4th down efficiency
  • Defensive stats (sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles, TFL, PBU etc.)

Also, I hope to post a "Game at Glance" drive chart this week and look more closely at our TD scoring drives.

What else is of interest or do you all think is a significant area of strength or weakness that it might be good to examine more closely?

Because it was relevant to another thread, I just updated the stats on Panthers 1st downs in all our games - notably the % gained by penalty.  We really need to thank the Saints.  The 6 free first downs they gave us were really crucial to keeping several of our drives alive and helping us win the game.  We had a season high number of 1st downs at New Orleans, but we also had a season high % of 1st downs gained by penalty.  Thank You New Orleans!

We got 6 free first downs (18% of our total 1st downs) courtesy of the Saints.  I think most of those were thanks to Browner, but I don't have the exact number handy.  As you can see below, 18% of 1st downs on penalties is MUCH higher than any other game this season.  Our season average is 8%
