Week 15 WIN against the NY Giants - Stats & Analysis

As you all undoubtedly already know, the three other teams to make it to 14-0 all made it to the Super Bowl.  But only the 72 Dolphins won it.  It would be so amazing for our team under Shula as O.C. to win this year!!!  Pats & Colts were Shula-less!

All three previous NFL teams to reach 14-0 (Miami in 1972, New England in 2007 and Indianapolis in 2009) made the Super Bowl.

Panthers are fourth team to start 14-0, joining:

Miami '72 (won Super Bowl)

New England '07 (lost SB)

Indianapolis '09 (lost SB)

So here are some end of game tweets with updates on various records & streaks...

Carolina scored 38 points against the Giants to push the team’s season total to 449, the best mark in franchise history.

This season, Carolina has scored 124 points off of turnovers, three shy of matching a franchise record.

Carolina’s offense recorded 171 rushing yards, marking the 25th consecutive game with 100 or more rushing yards.

Newton led his fourth game-winning drive of the season. He has 12 career game-winning drives.

Newton is now the only player in NFL history to start a career with 5 straight years with 3,000 or more pass yards and 500 or more rush yards.

More nice stats from J Jones.  This would appear to be counting only regular season games.  Of course Carolina's winning streak is now up to 18 regular season games, but one of those was DA's start against Tampa following Cam's accident last year:

Longest winning streak by QB in NFL history:

08-09 P. Manning- 23

06-08 Brady- 20

03-04 Brady- 18

12-13 P. Manning and 14-15 Newton- 17

BBR must be working on a stats & superlatives post.  Here are a bunch of great & informative tweets from Bill Voth:

Ted Ginn was targeted 14 times today. 2nd most of career (16 with MIA vs IND on 9/21/09). Most w/CAR previously was 10.

Panthers allowed nearly as many rushing yards today (161) as they did in their past four games combined (169).

Panthers have allowed just two 100-yd rushers since last November: Doug Martin 106 yds in Week 4 & Rashad Jennings 107 yds today.

Unless the Cardinals score 28 more points, the Panthers will remain No. 1 in points scored.

That was tweeted midway through the Cards game last night.... Cards fell short by 4 points... here are the updated totals:

Points scored through Week 15:

1) Panthers - 449

2) Cardinals - 445

3) Patriots - 435

Already posted by another Huddler in a stand alone thread, but ESPN has a nice article updating Cam's amazing stats:

http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/112700/cam-newtons-list-of-achievements-keeps-growing

Add a bunch more accolades to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s list of accomplishments in 2015.

The Elias Sports Bureau notes that Newton is the first player to have at least 340 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in the same game, and is also the first to have five touchdown passes and 100 rushing yards in the same game. It's the third time this season that he has thrown five touchdown passes, which (with Elias' research) puts him on this notable list.

ESPN Stats & Information

Newton now has five seasons with at least 3,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards. That’s the most in NFL history.

Newton became the fourth different quarterback to win at least 17 straight regular-season starts in the Super Bowl era. Elias notes that the other three are Peyton Manning (23, 2008-2009 and 17, 2012-2013), Tom Brady (21, 2006-2008 and 18, 2003-2004) and Jim McMahon (22, 1984-1987).

The 100 rushing yards elevated Newton from 16th all-time in rushing yards by a quarterback to 13th, passing Tuffy Leemans, Tobin Rote and Bill Dudley (Rote was the last of those three to be active -- he last played in 1966). The next two quarterbacks in front of Newton, who now has 3,151 rushing yards, are John Elway (3,407) and Donovan McNabb (3,459).

Newton has now thrown 19 touchdowns, rushed for two touchdowns and thrown only one interception in his past six games.

Huddler @Nate Dogg has posted this stat about Ted Ginn:

Quote

Ted Ginn is top 10 in reception touchdowns and yards per reception... The Cam and Ginn connection is hard to explain.

So incredible.  I'll try to work up some stats, but I recall seeing that Ginn's stats are considerably better than many of those considered "top" WRs in the league... and that was before yesterday's game.

I think Ginn's 10 TDs are the most by any Panthers' wide receiver since Steve Smith in 2005, but again I'll check on that.

Ah... I no sooner post that about thinking Ginn's 10 TDs are the most by any WR since 2005, but needing to check the info... than I go to Twitter and see Max Henson has already done the research.  Thanks Max:

Ted Ginn has 10 TDs this year. Last time a Panthers WR had that many was back in 2005 when Steve Smith had 12.

.@PFF had Josh Norman w/ his worst grade of the season by a wide margin. Grade affected by 2 penalties and 3 missed tackles.

David Newton @DNewtonespn 3h

Here's what PFF said about Panthers CB Josh Norman's performance against Giants: Norman (-5.9) received his worst grade of the season by a wide margin. The poor grade is due in large part to his 3 missed tackles and penalties.
