Panthers Report Card for Week 7 - Bills

First off I have to say that this was one of the strangest games that I have ever seen. One team seemed to totally dominate in every category but the score and the all important turnover ration. It seemed as if the Panthers couldn't get out of their own way, especially near the scoring zone. The drive at the end of half 1 and the special teams blunder at the end of half 2 summed up the whole day for me. Late in the 1st half I was seriously calling for a kneel down. Jake almost threw three picks that one drive but somehow we got to field goal range and spiked the ball with 1 second left. hallelujah on comes our most consistent player....oh well.

Offense: D

Overall they moved the ball between the 30's pretty well but in the two most important categories (scoring and turnovers) they failed miserably. Two points at half in an NFL is embarrasing.

QB: F-

Do we really need to go here. The dude sucks period.

RB: B

I personally thought Smith and Williams were the only two players that Carolina had on offense. Willy ran hard and put up 86 on the ground and 149 total. His TD run was pure joy to watch. Need to have him carry the load

WR: C

Smith was solid for the first time this season. 6 catches and 99 yds with jake at QB is like 12 for 199 with anyone else. The rest of the corp was non existent.

O-line: C

Not a bad day for these guys. Jake and Fox can't possibly blame the Int's on the line this time. All three throws Jake had ample time to deliver the ball. The line did allow some late pressure but overall a pretty decent day for them.

Defense: A

This unit continues to impress me and continues to get the shaft from Jake and the offense. I honestly believe that they would have had less than 9 for the game if not for turnovers. The Bills simply couldn't move the ball by pass or by run.

D-Line: A

Hollis Thomas has made a huge impact on this team. His play has coincided with the emergence of the Panthers defense. Peppers played well again and I really like the play of Brown and Brayton. Developing a pretty good line here.

LB: B

Playing without their best player, this unit was solid led by Beason. Thought L. Johnson played well for the first time as a Panther.

Secondary: B

Hard to grade any lower than this considering the Bills did nothing with the pass. I know Gamble gave up a big play or two but overall the Bills did nothing vs. this unit.

Special Teams: F-

Again another bad day for this unit. We have to have the worst return game in football (possibly even college football). Kick return, we hardly ever get the ball past the 20 and punt return our guys looked scared to run the ball, even if they can catch it first. Lloyd sucks all of a sudden and Kasey (even though I love the guy) even sucked yesterday. If Jake has to pay for the offensive woes (and he should) shouldn't Crossman pay for this unit consistently playing poorly.

    • It’s like being on the Flyers broadcast team feed so far
    • Boy the flyers look good early. Lots of bad plays and slow start by our team. Hope that changes before the score changes.
    • I guess I should have stipulated outside the sacred cow.   I complained from year one that Bryce should compete for and win the starting job on his own merit but no he was just handed it. I have been right there with everyone that wants competition.  But I don’t really have a huge problem with it for this season the way it has gone because where are the viable people we don’t have to trade for? I actually am okay with tiny hands Pickett because he is so close to Bryce arm strength wise and to be honest, skill wise. Probably. And it is only a one year deal.  That also takes into account that the QB class is looking stacked next year and if Young fails miserably then we get either a reset or a real competition and there will be more guys that I would like looking at in the FA QB class next year as well.    I sort of accept where we are this year and look at it as another treading water year (at QB). I just want to get to next year with some clarity. More than anything. And they did empty out the room (behind him anyway). Again, who was really there for us?  And I know it would not be a true competition at this point anyway. They are giving him the year, like it or not.    Also I don’t give a poo about winning games IF he sucks and or goes down after sucking because draft position and that stacked QB class.  And I want out from under him So Bad.     So I guess it is several factors that lessen my anxiety over his backup this particular season.    I am not trying to convince anyone, but you asked. That’s how I look at it.
