Madden cover man revealed

Posted by Mike Florio on April 22, 2010 7:17 AM ET

Simultaneously, all Saints fans and Vikings defensive Jared Allen have just shouted the "F" word.

Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Drew Brees will be on the cover of the Madden 11 game.

Brees achieved the honor via an online fan vote. The other finalists were Allen and Colts receiver Reggie Wayne, whose indirect contribution to the new version of the game will be a revolutionary defensive back route-jumping animation.

Saints fans likely will be leery due to the so-called "Madden curse," which supposedly results in injury or ineffectiveness for the cover athlete. We generally don't believe in such nonsense, but to the extent that the notion of a curse creeps into the back of the mind of the guy who is subject to it, who knows?

Last year, the Madden game featured Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Polamalu was injured in Week One and played sparingly thereafter. Fitzgerald had no ill effects; indeed, he somehow avoided what appeared to be a serious knee injury at one point.

    • He threw for 199 and 198 against Miami and the Cowboys so he didn't get them into that situation in those games. More importantly, Miami, the Cowboys and the Packers threw for 261, 256 and 273 yards respectivly - all more than Young. And yet they all lost. High passing yardage does not equate to wins.
    • Fair point, honestly didn't even realize he was listed as questionable as well, could still be for both of them in case either isn't able to go tomorrow. That Canales said something like "we'll check him out tomorrow to make sure he's able to go" still makes me think they were still expecting him to play, as that would be a weird way to phrase it if they felt he was more likely to not be playing. Still just hoping it would be like when a player feels something in a game, gets checked out, but goes back in.  And since it was just practice, once he felt anything, they just shut him down for the day to be safe.
    • The Golden Calf of Bristol was Mr Clutch time.  It’s the Skip Bayless argument.  Someone how being trash all game doesn’t matter….if you can cherry pick one random play late
