The Forgotten Ship: The USS Kirk

The USS Kirk carried out one of the most significant humanitarian missions in U.S. military history. Yet the story went untold for 35 years. Correspondent Joseph Shapiro and producer Sandra Bartlett of NPR's Investigative Unit interviewed more than 20 American and Vietnamese eyewitnesses and participants in the events of late April and early May 1975. They studied hundreds of documents, photographs and other records, many never made public before — including cassette tapes recorded at the time by the ship's chief engineer.

Shapiro first learned of the Kirk from Jan Herman, historian of the U.S. Navy Medical Department, who says the Kirk's heroics got lost because, as the Vietnam War ended, Americans were bitterly divided over the war's course and cost. There was little interest in celebrating a mission that saved the lives of 20,000 to 30,000 refugees. Herman is working on a book documenting the story and a film documentary, which was shown when the Kirk crew met for a reunion in Springfield, Va., in July.

Great story. Can't wait for the next two installments.

    • Haha One thing I know is that I'm not one to complain in retrospect much, only when it's super damn obvious.  That draft was soooo damn obvious. So f*cking clear what we needed to do.  And it was hard to stomach for a lot of us.  I was not a Legette fan, just had to accept it and hope he was aight.   It was just like Mingo.  A guy most consensus had late 2nd/early 3rd at best.  If anything, Legette was a bigger reach than Mingo.  And we all felt it for some time after that draft.  It didn't feel good.  If anyone goes back, I was a Frazier, Sainristil, Pearsall, and Kneeland fan.  Could've gone BPA at so many critical spots rather than a cheerleading "fun" local interview.   I'll never forget an Athletic Pod with Brugler breaking down Legette.  He mentioned how he had spoke with a lot of teams and most of the league had him highest, a 3rd rounder.  There was one or two teams that had him much higher than others.  Voila.
    • I didn't say SB contender. Far from it. The D is quietly every bit as bad as the offense. The head coach is responsible for more than just the offense.
