If you have a pool, use it! Swimming is one of the best activities you can do IMO because it builds both cardio and muscle conditioning. Learn proper form, get a decent pair of swimmers goggles and a maybe a basic wetsuit if you want to swim outdoors or in a colder pool even. Because you have to control your breathing, overtime your body will adapt to better use stored O2. Distance swimming is purely an endurance exercise, so start off with a pace that's comfortable. You want to be able to swim for 20-25 minutes at least, like any other form of cardio, and if you go too fast you're going to eventually get a big mouth full of water.
