No, he was a god and they show it in the preview. They showed Odin throwing him out of the heavens.

I dont think they changed it up that much. I mean they have changed every comic character a little when they put them on the big screen. I am really looking forward to this movie. I am not so sure about Captain America though. I want that one to be great, but everything I see lets me down. This trailer wasnt much new though. Most of that footage was in the Comic-Con trailer.
