Past Trophey Winners and Future Winners (Canes edition)

Recommended Posts

As many know the NHL gives out trophy’s based on performance throughout the season and one of Carolina's own is in the lead in one trophy race. That being Jeff Skinner who looks like he is running away with the trophy as he has 39 points and the closest to him based on points is Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks (who is also 3 years older than Skinner) and based on skill defenseman Cam Fowler and John Carlson.

5th- Skinner is in games played but has appeared in every single game this year. (He is 5th because the Canes have not played as many games as ATL, NYR, PIT, and WSH.

2nd- Skinner is 2nd in goals with 17 trailing only Couture who has 21.

1st- Skinner is 1st in assists among rookies with an impressive tally of 22.

16th- This may be the only down part that could hold Skinner back, Skinner has a plus/minus of 3 as where others in contention for the trophy such as Carlson (+/- of 13) and Couture (+/- of 10) have been apart of some high scoring lines (This is what is keeping Carlson close to Skinner in the race for the Calder Trophy as he is a defenseman and should get votes based on that strong plus/minus rating.)

27th- Skinner is 27th in penalty minutes and in this case the lower number the better. Skinner does get caught with tripping penalties sometimes but due to his size he tends to stay out of the box quite a bit which is a very good thing as voters like to see players that show discipline. Out of the contenders only Cam Fowler and Taylor Hall have less penalty minutes (This is keeping Fowler in the race because as a defenseman you have to be aggressive but if you can play aggressive with out taking penalties you are just giving your team a bonus.)

1st/4th Based on all rookies Skinner is 4th in points per game with 0.83ppg, but the three guys ahead of him have not played over 6 games each which eliminates them from contention anyway. However Couture is lurking right behind Skinner but with a less profound number of 0.66.

3rd Skinner is third in shots on goal trailing only Hall and Couture, however Skinner has more goals than Hall and the fact that Couture has taken 36 more shots on goal than Skinner may explain why he has 4 more goals than Skinner.

27th/3rd Shot Percentage much like points per game can be an eschewed stat as Skinner is 27th in shot percentage among all rookies. However out of the players that have played more than 40 games this season and taken more than 60 shots only 2 are ahead of Skinner in Bryan Bickell from Blackhawks and Michael Grabner from the Islanders. (Neither are in contention for the trophy.)

10th- This may be another hindrance. Skinner is 10th in goals per game and the voters like to see players that can get it done with the game on the line. This would not be that big of a deal if so many players in contention for the trophy were not ahead of Skinner in this category, but Couture (1st), Hall (2nd), Carlson (2nd), and Stepan (5th) are all in front of him.

4th- Skinner is 4th in power play goals and the only one ahead of him in contention for the trophy is Couture.

2nd- Skinner is 2nd in power play assists trailing only Cam Fowler who is in contention for the trophy.

N/A- Short Handed Goals and Assists

Summary- If Skinner can get his plus/minus up to around 10 and get himself a couple more game winning goals there is no denying that Jeff Skinner will be the Rookie of the year (Calder Memorial Trophy Winner) as he is solid in every other category.

    • Yeah, Dave doesn't seem like a "muh scheme" type of coach where he wants plays drawn up for his QB to robotically go through a preprogrammed process. He seems like more the type of coach that just wants his scheme to produce opportunities for a QB to be a playmaker. It's a scheme you'd love to play in as a QB and it's the type of scheme that should work really well for the "point guard mentality" QB they tried to sell us on Bryce being and the type of QB he was at Alabama but at the NFL level all of those physical shortcomings that seemed plainly evident to many of us on the college field are showing up in a big way. Even with his bad decisions I honestly think a lot of it is that he's struggling to see the field. I don't mean that figuratively in that he's misreading the defense or missing open receivers, I mean that literally in that I think he's struggling to see the field over the lines of 6'4"+ huge men in front of him. Reich used to talk about creating throwing lanes for Bryce to see through and holy poo... if you need throwing lanes now you've massively shrunk your opportunities. Now you're trying to play QB through a picket fence. If you watched him play at Bama, you saw him routinely drop back 10-15 yards behind the LOS to gain depth so that he could see over the scrum. You just can't do that routinely in the NFL. NFL pass rushers are just too good. Your OTs can't create that deep of a pocket.
    • This could be a breakout game for Kyle Pitts. I'm hoping for a miracle just so we have something to talk about besides the team sucking poo.
    • I don't remember a 2018 tear down. I remember the failed 2019 failed build up of the 3-4 switch which is still stuck in the 'working on the foundation' stage. I thought 2020 was closer to that but really it was just an idiot behind the wheel doing what idiots do. Poor drafting and free agents is the main problem IMO. This team hits so little on talent it's actually amazing they don't stumble over more just by accident.   I still don't think there is anything to tear down. Just a ton of easy to dump people that should happen. It's a bottom of the roster churn that reaches 2/3s the way up this roster.
