Roger Goodell coming to Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will begin a series of training camp visits in the aftermath of the lockout and he’ll kick it off by visiting the Carolina Panthers and their fans.

That’s probably not a simple coincidence. Consider it a message to fans and players. Goodell and Carolina owner Jerry Richardson, who served as co-chair of the league’s recent labor negotiations, were two controversial -- and sometimes unpopular -– figures with players and fans.

The damage control or reconstruction will come Wednesday. Goodell will hold a forum where he will answer questions from fans, starting at 5:15 p.m. He also will take in a practice that starts at 6 p.m. and, presumably, talk to players at some point.
