NHL.com is doing a dream draft where they pick the best (current and past) players at the spot they were taking (1-30) and list them out.

 

The Carolina Hurricanes own Cam Ward came in as the best current player to be drafted 25th overall...

The Carolina Hurricanes were riding high after reaching the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 2002, and that success carried over to the 2002 NHL Draft.

 

The first round in Toronto planted the seeds for even greater success a few years later.

 

The Hurricanes selected goaltender Cam Ward, and 11 years later, NHL.com's 13-member Dream Draft panel has voted Ward the best No. 25 first-round pick.

 

Ward finished 14-8-2 in 28 games in his first NHL season, with a 3.68 GAA and .882 save percentage. The Hurricanes won the Southeast Division with Gerber playing the majority of the games, but when Gerber stumbled in Game 2 of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, coach Peter Laviolette inserted Ward, and the rookie never relinquished the job. He posted a 2.14 GAA and two shutouts in 23 games and won the Conn Smythe Trophy en route to helping the Hurricanes win their first Stanley Cup.

 

"Cam Ward is a franchise-defining goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes who has delivered the team a Stanley Cup despite just entering his prime," NHL.com senior managing editor Shawn P. Roarke said. "He could, conceivably, be a difference-maker for the Hurricanes for another decade. That is a legacy that is impossible to ignore."

Calgary Flames left wing: Gary Roberts was an honorable mentions for the 12th pick.

      I'm more impressed with the UDFA that the guys they have drafted in the first the last 2 years. A whole lot of prove it is still needed before any improvement should be talked about seriously.

      While I don't believe its a must win, (we have been better on the road this post season) it is definitely A NEED TO WIN the longer this series goes the more pronounced the Canes advantage on rest and health will be! If we hold serve at home in games 1 and 2 guaranteeing a 6 game minimum series for them if we lose the road games..... by the game 4 and 5 I expect them to be beat they have played A LOT OF HOCKEY the last three years, they have MINIMAL rest off a more physical than one might have expected series vs the leafs.... you know Tampa took their pound of flesh in round 1 from them. Combine all that with the fact that even though this year's canes squad isn't as talented as last years this IS a better squad than the one they swept last time that had McKenzie Mckeathern on line 1 Turbo with a broken hand a banged uo and eventually concussed Slavin (and even though it was a sweep 6 OTS and 4 1 goal losses is hardly dominant)  This year Bob hasn't been superman (hes probably gonna still have a great save percentage agiast us just a side effect of our style) Thatchuk is maybe 50% (3 game winners agiast us) their defense no longer has Gudas and several other downgrades.  While the Canes have a healthy and performing Svechnikov along with other big guys to counteract florida like Carrier, Jankowski, Robinson.   I by know means think it will happen but I either see this as a low scoring dog fight or a series were the canes surprise and end up dominating.
