What's your solution to the gun issue?
Okay, the rules are simple; State in a clearly outlined fashion what exactly you would do to solve the gun violence crisis in the US. BUT, and I cannot state this more clearly: DO NOT criticize someone's plan without first laying out your own plan. I'm sick of these threads devolving into a back and forth argument over minutia. This is an effort to have this conversation without it turning into an automatic contradiction. We've all got opinions, we've all got solutions, so now's the time to put up or shut up.
    I'll go first:
License for firearms. In order to get licensed, you need to pass a comprehensive background check, pass an eye exam (or get an eye doctor's exemption), get gun safety certified, and pass a psychological evaluation. Background checks only pick up people who have PRIOR mental health diagnoses. That was only 23% of mass shooters in a year 2000 study. How else can we be sure someone doesn't have a mental issue, but hasn't been diagnosed YET?Register ALL firearms. You get caught with a gun that's not registered to you, big-time fine.Mental health screening every 6 months. Did you know airline pilots have to have regular health and mental acuity screenings to ensure they are still fit to fly? They do. It's absurd that people who handle deadly weapons aren't held to the same standard.Implement a program to promote less lethal options for home and self defense. Try to decrease society's reliance on firearms. Teach kids self defense skills, allow (and tacitly encourage) schoolyard fights, and promote the use of less-lethal ammunition for home safety and personal protection weapons (beanbag and rubber rounds). Start a fund for financing legal defense for home owners who are sued by injured home-invaders (to deal with the unfortunate reality that it's better to kill a home invader than injure them for fear of legal repercussion. Ultimately the goal should be to save lives, including the lives of the guilty)
You may now criticize my plan, or any aspect therein, but only AFTER laying out your own plan.

There's a much stronger correlation between preoccupation with firearms (48%), and history of assault (i.e. violent misdemeanors including bar fights) and mass shootings than there is between mental illness (23%) and shootings. (Source: 2000 case study of 34 mass shooters.)

As an atheist who doesn't rely on any religious dogma to set my moral compass, I think that's utter nonsense. I've gone my whole life without killing more than 2 people (that I know of). I don't steal more than I can carry. And I never have sex with underaged hookers while sober. I don't know where these bible thumping conservatives get the idea that atheists are devoid of morality.

People always bring up the black market in these types of scenarios. But he cold hard fact, and research bears this out, that fewer guns in the nation translates to fewer shootings. And if the nebulous "criminals" are already buying ghosts on the black market, then there's nothing we can do to stop that. But if there are fewer handguns in pawn shops, gun shows, gun stores, then it's still harder for criminals to get their hands on them.

You're unwittingly making a great case for outlawing guns. Keep it up :)

I think y'all are being too hard on Jangler. This is a bit of a trap conversation because unless you are part of the "Corageous and Beautiful" camp that South Park parodied, it's easy to be labeled some kind of a bigot. And while perhaps he's being a tad insensitive, I don't think Jangler raises a bad point.
You can't condemn a person for surgically altering their body because they feel it should be different in one case but not another. Both are reflective of a psychological disorder.
And I think that's part of the reason for the anger in this thread; the negative connotation associated with the term "psychological disorder." It sounds like a harsh judgement, but it's just a fact. And more than a quarter of Americans (26.1%) have a diagnosable mental disorder, whether or not they are being treated for it or have even been diagnosed with it.
And Cat raised the point that there is no harm in living as another gender. That's true, but harm to self of others is not the basis for a mental disorder. You could also say that there's no harm in being OCD. Is there? You wash your hands a lot and organize your M&Ms by color? That's not harming yourself or others. But if you knew someone with OCD you'd probably suggest they get treated for it.
When someone has a compulsion to change their physiology, the easy fix is just to do the surgery. Whether it's willfully disabling yourself, changing your gender, or trying to get a nose that's shaped more like the lady folk in the magazines and the movie pictures. Sometimes the more difficult, but ultimately more beneficial treatment is resolving the underlying psychological conditions that lead people to believe they are in spectacularly the wrong shape.
If, through treatment, it's determined that there is really no other way to get the person's internal idea of "self" to be reflected in their outward form than by changing themselves surgically, then by all means do it. But you can't condemn this woman's actions and saying it's plainly different from sex reassignment.

Good post. I disagree, but at least you make reasoned arguments.

"I like guns. If that means that a couple tens of thousands of people need to die every year, so I can continue to jerk off on my pile of guns, so be it."

Well, since we've established there's literally nothing we can do to prevent gun violence (because the other first world countries who have significantly fewer shootings won't give up their secret formula to anti-gun-violence juice) clearly the only solution is to treat these kind of events as part of the entertainment industry. I mean, if we won't make any effort to fix the problem, (short of banning bricks, rope and knives) it's foolish and insincere to regard these incidents as tragedies. It's just click bait.
And as far as entertainment value, meh. C+
I mean, it's a rural logging community; not a major market. I mean, heck it's not even a state school. Body count is average, and consisting of adults. No school aged children, which is really going to hurt the staying power of this story. Once we find out the race and religion of the shooter and the victims, we might be able to bump this up to a B- if it turns out it's racially motivated or was perpetrated by a Muslim. A- if the shooter has ties to ISIS.
But, come on! A college shooting? That's so Two thousand and LATE! Didn't this loser know that the murder selfie is the gun violence blockbuster now? I mean, where's the Go Pro footage? Where's his Twitter handle and Instagram manifesto? He did a really poor job marketing this one.
Overall analysis? Mediocre at best. Will be forgotten in a couple weeks or so. Just chalked up as yet another, "Well there's nothing we could have done, and no way we could have stopped it. Mental Health, blah blah blah. See you at the next slaughter!"
And if you think this is offensive, and disrespectful to the victims and their families; Good. You have at least some soul left. No stop pretending there is any solution aside from outlawing guns that will stop tragedies like this happening. If you in any way do not support the wholesale removal of guns form our society, then don't dare act like you care about these victims.

I think Republicans should go around shooting other people with guns. Because how can you be sure they aren't crazy, or might go crazy later and go on a shooting spree.

Because it's fugging disingenuous to act shocked and saddened by this, then do NOTHING, and then act shocked and saddened again and again.
You want their legacy to not be tarnished? Then how about you actually do something to prevent senseless murder and exploitation from happening again?
Just whining that people are making this a gun issue while the blood is still wet is only enabling gun violence. It's saying, "Oh, let's just chill out with the politics until people's emotions are worn off, then we can placate the masses with statistics about automobile crash statistics, alcohol and rope."
You think you're somehow morally superior? No, it's exactly this attitude of , "well let's talk about it later," that ensures that nothing ever changes.
