  1. firstdayfan added a post in a topic Looks like this b/r writer was more irked than me on Shula's "Equalizer" comment.

I think this is huge...we start slow every year.  Last season it took half the season to stabilize the offensive line.  This year its the wide receivers.  Good thing is we are winning right now.  As long as we can keep getting by as Funchess and hopefully Norwood learn then we may be ok towards the back of the season when the big tests start happening.  Philly Brown can settle back into his slot receiver role, Ginn can be the occasional deep threat, and Cothery (if healthy) can be the crafty veteran receiver.
Think of how bad the offensive line was last year and how decent it was at the end.  I think the same thing could happen to the wide receiver group, we just have to buy some more time.

  2. firstdayfan added a post in a topic Panthers PFF Grades - Offense

I feel like PFF is the exact opposite.  They are extremely objective and grade the game by what a player does good and bad.  As a casual observer or a fan we can look at Cam's performance and subjectively say "well he carried the whole team on his back and willed the team to victory when it seemed everything else was against him".  But the PFF team isn't interested in that sort of thing.  They simply grade a player on the plays they make or don't make.
I personally think PFF is great at exactly what they do, which is to give a completely unbiased, objective view of what the players do on the field.  Are they always right?  Of course not, but they are one of the most accurate sources for info like this around, feel like we should understand it for what it is.

this is true...look at Russell wilson.  He won a Superbowl with a great defense, a decent running game and next to nothing on offense.  Stats are great but give me wins any day of the week.

Ever wonder how we were able to get such a valuable commodity to the practice squad?  Because no one else wanted him on their roster either.  We watch these guys and get attachments and sometimes that makes us believe someone is better than they actually are.  I have nothing against Bersin but he's on the practice squad for a reason.

Have you heard the one about trying harder to get the ball to Olsen?

  7. firstdayfan added a post in a topic I'm just not worried about this team anymore..

The only thing that worries me about Funchess is the coaches putting him into a Kelvin Benjamin type role.  Like someone mentioned on twitter last night, thats just not his game.
He is much more of an athletic, finesse receiver than a tough, gritty, physical receiver.

Which one of those is Allen Robinson because he's supposed to be pretty damn good.

I would say this is all a bit premature considering we've only seen about a quarter and a half of play from this guy but then I realized that this is the huddle, so I guess it's about right.

  10. firstdayfan added a post in a topic Bersin 4 targets 4 catches at the half. it "hate" to call a spade a spade?  The guy catches the ball yes, absolutely, can't deny that.  But if he were released tomorrow I doubt he would be picked up.  I'm fine with Bersin, nothing against him but there's just nothing to get excited about at all, he won't beat good corners, won't out muscle anyone in the end zone, he's very good at the niche of catching passes over the middle against zone defense.  So while I have no problem with Bersin in a slot receiver/4th receiver role, I'm not going to jump off the couch when he makes a catch.
So if that makes me a hater then oh well.

I read somewhere last night that Justin Hunter might get cut from the Titans.  Although I doubt it will happen.

Serious question, what does Bersin offer over the occasional first down catch over the middle?  I did see him on special teams last night so there's that.  To me, he is as good as he will ever be right now, not a lot of upside.

  13. firstdayfan added a post in a topic We're a Funchess injury away from tonight, all season (or as long as DF is out) therefore ...

He drove his team down in the 2 min drill for a touchdown and was winning the game at half time despite his mistakes and poor options.  But let me say this, I get that people despise Brady.  I'm not saying I love the guy, just trying to be observant.  You could look at it two ways.
    1) Cam hung with Brady with similar weapons, this is a good thing and something that we should be excited about.  If Cam can continue to make good throws eventually the receivers, even brown, catch them.  This is what great players do.
    2) Brady as well as other quarterbacks in the league deal with receiver issues and move on yet we dwell on it as a fanbase and say "oh well if cam had this or this he would be this or this".  There are very few teams in the league that are loaded in the receiving game.  3 good targets is usually about as good as it gets and that includes running backs and tight ends.
Either way I think Cam played great yesterday and if continues to play that way it won't really matter who is catching the ball because he will make them better.  Just like Peyton, Rodgers, Brady, and others have done for years.

Nobody made all these excuses for tom Brady last night?  Everyone said we made him look terrible or that he played like poo. But he was working with the same if not worse weapons than cam and he got it done.
I will admit, at least Brady has a few weapons getting healthy and ones that are better than funchess right now.  But when are we going to move on from this received thing?  Look we had KB, funchess and a host of nice slot type receivers.  We were in the best shape in years.  But KB goes down, it happens.
The packers lost Nelson who actually accounted for more yardage and catches than KB and no one feels bad for Rodgers.  Either we accept that Cam NEEDS weapons or we realize that he is a good QB that can get it done despite not having great weapons.  Much like on that first drive of the second half.  No QB in the league has receivers that catch the ball every time, and there are similar or worse situations than ours, just look at clevalnd, Seattle, houston, cincy, San diego, San Francisco, dallas, Kansas city and others.  Take the top WR off those teams and my god they look awful.  At least we still have Olsen and a great defense.
    Perspective people.

  15. firstdayfan added a post in a topic So our D looked that good with no KK, Star or CJ?! Holy poo

The improved tackling is what stood out most to me...something I was really growing concerned with.
But yes I agree with everyone else when I say that the pats literally had no one out there.  Because of that they were more vanilla than they probably would be.
