Gay only really struggled in Toronto. The rest of his career he has been an 18-20 ppg scorer at 45% from the field. One big reason why he struggled in Toronto is because he had the green-light to shoot as much as he wants and was forced to shoot that much. In Charlotte with Big Al, Kemba, and possibly Afflalo he would not get more than 15 shots a game or so. I could even get on board with Deng, but he's not at Rudy Gay's level offensively and defensively he isn't that much better too (Rudy can be a very solid defensive player). We just can't go into the season with Big Al and Kemba being our primary options again. Even if we added Afflalo I just don't see him as anything more than Kemba (a #3 option at best).
Sorry it's the cap on the team, sf will always need to be a defensive stopper first and foremost with Big Al here.
Hence the only options are upgrading Sg, PF or completely starting over.
Best way to improve the team would be get a pass first drive and kick PG, a solid Sg with 3 range and drive ability and a true reliable stretch 4. you have a really low ceiling with a core of MKG, Jefferson and Kemba.
Not much you can do about it with MKG being a cog on defense to cover up the limitations of most of the starting lineup defensively.
MKG makes that lineup work defensively and is actually the most important piece contention wise.
Signing Al was a very short term move with a low ceiling, pretty much a 1 & done 7th/8th seed with Jefferson and Kemba here. Team will also pretty much have to be rebuilt in two seasons.
