So I got a little summer job working at a local grocery store. The job sucks, but I knew that going in but the bills have to be paid so I thought I would just solider on. Yesterday around 3 oclock I got a call from my boss that they needed me to come in because somebody else called out. "fug", because I had planned to spend yesterday at the library volunteering with some local teens. Whatever. Anyway I go in, and it turns out that not one, but two people have called out. What is supposed to be a three man job is now a two man job. Me and my equally pissed off coworker work our asses off for 6 straight hours, no break, no water, nothing but picking and stocking, only to be told "Thanks, you can go home now". CHING CHING. WHAT IN THE ENTIRE fug.

Imagine getting sent home 2 hours early after completely busting your ass just because they realized that they could save an entire 40 bucks by sending us both home. Rather or not I go to work today is a decision I still have to make. Its not just this incident I see GROWN MEN in the back, crying while smoking a cig. Seriously fug these people. I'll bite the bullet and take out a summer loan next year because this is ridiculous. /rant

Never work for a corporation again?  So exactly do you plan to work for?  The choices are pretty much a corporation, the government, or yourself.  And working for yourself tends to be the most difficult of the three.

Fwiw, back when I was young and had a crappy job, we use to compete to be the one who went home early when things were slow.  :)

Worked for FEDEX while in college at night. Covered for many a person calling in.
If this really happened then let it drive you to do bigger and better things. And if you dont work for a corp thats great. But those that work for you are now working for a corp.

Good for you, but being profitable in one's own business is highly dependent on a few things.

1. What field your business is in.

2.  Ability and ambition

3. Depending on what that field is, one's willingness to not make much money during the early years

A lot don't make it, and the younger one is, the less likely making it is.

Typical 47%er, corporate America provides a source of income and you still complain.

Seriously, your boss is sending you and your coworker a message:

Don't do your jobs so efficiently next time and he'll be forced to give you a full days wages.

Or he is saying, do your job efficiently, and you get to leave early, where as the rest of the sluggards have to stay here and put up with me riding their butts.

Seems like the OP was working hard for a paycheck and ending up being rewarded for his efforts with a 25% cut in his day's wages.
