Even though Sunday Night's matchup against the Chiefs is a preseason game, it may be the most important game of Philly Brown's young career.
According to Ron Rivera, Brown will be returning punts.
The Panthers are still looking for the player that will rise above and accept the punt return challenge. Against the Bills, Philly proved he was an asset in punt coverage, providing great special teams play. This week, he gets to show his value with the ball in his hands.
Philly Brown has punt experience from his days as an Ohio State Buckeye...
If Brown can perform at the same level in the pro game, his roster spot is a lock.
Brown has impressed as of late. During the last days of camp he seemed to have a light bulb moment, catching several nice passes and looking less like an undrafted rookie. The game may be starting to slow down for him a bit.
Ron Rivera recently named Brown as training camp's biggest surprise.
Cam Newton has also seemed to have taken note as indicated by his celebrations with brown after big plays.
In my latest roster projection , I had Philly Brown making the regular season roster as one of six wide receivers. For Philly to solidify that list, he will need to 1.) Not fumble or muff a punt and 2.) Have at least one decent return. If he can do those two things I believe the punt return position will be his to lose.
It doesn't get any bigger for a undrafted rookie trying to make a football team. Win and you're in. Lose and you go home.
This is preseason football at its best.
