When did it become popular to call Charleston, SC "Chucktown"?

It's annoyed me for several years, only now it has bubbled up onto teh interwebs where all good discourse belongs. I'm convinced this has happened in the last 10 years.

well, when ppl started calling North Davidson, NODA it irritated the crap outta me...then, I got over it and got used to it

And it's been Chucktown since the mid 90s at least. And my SOB mom says Chaaaalston.

SoPa!

A term, which we all know, is short for Sopa-Narope.

town nicknames are a fact of life. I'm from "Trin'te" originally. that's just a little south of "Tha Boro" and east of "K vegas". Love'em or not, people will always come up with lazy ways of saying where they are from.

It was called Chucktown much longer than that. I heard it called that long before I was down there in the late 80's.

About the same time as the rise in popularity of Chuck Norris and Chuck Taylors....hmmmm

Better than "Tha Gas House", I hope they don't still call it that.
