I agree.  Tried to read one of them on a long flight and they are to long and not that interesting.  I read most of it during the flight simply because there wasn't much else to do.  On the return flight, I ended up reading or re-reading the Killer Angels, one of my favorites.

There are a couple good books. The first season of the show follows the first book pretty closely and then starts branching out after that. Clash of Kings and storm of swords were great.. Then they split the characters into two books and had mixed results

The pilot episode of the show made me go out and get the books. I read the first 4 right before book 5 came out. They were a gateway drug and now I've read countless other books and discovered other great authors. I wasn't a reader at all before, so there's that.

I'm obviously a fan of both the books and the show, but I can relate to book readers' woes with some of the changes the show made.

That said, it is easily still the best show on TV as far as I am concerned, and besides a couple other shows, nothing that I have seen has really come close within the past decade.

I'm looking forward to season 7 and beyond. Season 8 will only be 6-7 episodes IIRC.

As far as the spinoffs, they've already came out and said that Dunk and Egg wouldn't be one of them. That's kind of a bummer, because they are good stories too.

If I had to guess, we might see some stuff about the Age of Heroes, Aegon's Conquest, The Blackfyre Rebellion, Robert's Rebellion, The Dance of Dragons, or maybe even the arrival of the Andals into Westeros.

Most of that will be monster/dragon-less political drama, though, and I'm not sure how successful it would be.

I'd rather them get with other fantasy authors to develop their series (Scott Lynch - Gentlemen Bastards) (Patrick Rothfuss - The Kingkiller Chronicle) than try to milk more stuff out of Martin.

Netflix is making a show based on The Witcher books.     The games have been fantastic so I'm excited.

Even though they're comedies, right now I'd put Brockmire, Rick and Morty, and Silicon Valley over them as my favorite things to watch. I don't have a good drama going on right now.  I've heard good things about The Leftovers, but meh.

I'm currently reading through the books and I'm enjoying them for the most part. It gives you a lot more insight into certain characters and it really makes it obvious why some characters were killed off. I.E., Theon and Jamie have a lot more depth in the books since you better understand their thought process, and it's a joy when the Starks die because they're so dumb and their chapters are so boring.

Some characters translate better on the show, like Cersei and Brienne. But others are pretty much ruined now for me, like Danaerys and Tyrion.

Ser Jorah is better on the show than in the books, too, I think. Alfie Allen's portrayal of Theon definitely does the books justice.

I just hate that they both cut it and then started dragging it out, and I'm tired of it all at this point.  End it already and put it out of it's misery so Martin can die.

I'm in the same boat for a lot of the this.

I actually started, the other night, rewatching the entire series from S1E1. I hope to be done by July 16th.

Show Dany doesn't nail the innocent child vibe you get from the books. She goes from helpless sister to a maniac to Khaleesi mode way too fast, and it comes off as a little teen-drama-ish. Her and Drogo's relationship was kind of just breezed over and condensed to the point where I don't feel they did it justice.

I still don't like that the show made it seem like Cat didn't want Ned to go south. In the books, IIRC, she wanted him to go, and it ultimately made the decision more tragic for her, for me at least.

Things like that just bug me, but it's okay in the long run.

I will say watching season one while I was reading the books made the reading a lot easier. As a reader, I try to picture the story in my head as I read it, and having faces and names etc. really helped that process.

Tyrion is probably my favorite character from the books and the show, but the show doesn't really do him enough justice. Don't get me wrong, I think Dinklage does an excellent job, but it is in the show's writing that his portrayal doesn't really cut it.

Better in the books:
Tyrion
Dany
Jaime
Loras
Euron
Asha (Yara in the books)
Daario
Jaqen H'ghar
Mance Rayder
Roose Bolton
Robb's Wife (Talisa? on the show, Jeyne Westerling in the books)
Jon Snow

Better on the show:
Cersei
Sandor Clegane
Theon
Ramsay Bolton
Stannis
Ygritte
Brienne
Tormund

Nailed Castings that were great in both:
Joffrey
Ned Stark
Jorah
Lord Commander Mormont
Alliser Thorne
Arya
Hodor (lol)
Tywin
Syrio
Varys
Littlefinger

Cool people in the books that the show omitted:
Victarion
Aeron Damphair
Strong Belwas

...off the top of my head

I would like to see them do a spinoff that isn't a prequel.  Maybe 20 years or more after the events that end the current series.  That way, they don't have to be tied (even loosely) to the books, and no one would have a clue how it would turn out.  They could maybe have a few characters from the current show, assuming anyone survives.  But mostly with the children of the survivors.  Or even have entirely new families take over as the power brokers in Westeros.

So possibly final season not till 2019??? Bummer.   I still bet they do a theater release for a big final finish, and I may actually enjoy that not sure.

I read the books only a few years ago. The differences don't really bother me. I enjoyed the books but I agree that if you're caught up with the show, a lot of the drama is spoiled.

The first book and first season are really tied closely and I enjoyed the book a lot. Not sure why they're dragging out the last season. Is it scheduling or something?

They know their subscriber numbers will drop when GoT is done, so they're milking it as long as they can... Probably hoping peeps get addicted to Westworld or that they can be ahead of the game in producing one of the spinoffs.

@Bronn @Porn Shop Clerk

Will you two stop running your emo/hipster circle jerk all over a thread started by people that are actually excited about the new season? I've read all the books, know all the spoiler theories and have watched all the shows. Just because I know what's coming and have ideas about what should happens doesn't mean I can't enjoy the most entertaining show on TV over the last decade.

@Moorgan the season's been split because they need to film longer episodes and need to film more in winter locations which limits their available time per season.
