Brown = no pass coverage.

Norwood is already sketchy in pass coverage, which is the main reason he may not see the field as much as some of you hope he will.

4-3 DE is a MASSIVELY different position than 4-3 OLB. The difference is no so great in a 3-4 but in a 4-3 all of your responsibilities change, it would take Brown at least a year or maybe 2 to get the drift from DE to OLB. So its not gonna happen.

What?

Are you saying that the difference between a 3-4 DE and a 3-4 OLB is not as much as a 4-3 DE and a 4-3 OLB?

3-4 DE's are massive immobile creatures, and under no circumstance can they be OLB's. 4-3 DE's could certainly make the switch much easier.

And so is already thinking he is a failure at the DE position after one preseason game isnt foolish or overreacting? I mean the title of the thread is knee-jerk in itself. You really think at this juncture they would make that big of a change? Do you think he would beat out who we have already playing lb?

If he is capable and would be an improvement to the team, then yes that would be great. I just didn't understand and from what evidence that anyone would suggest he has the ability to play LB in our system. It is a totally different skill set. Yes his size is pretty ideal and he has speed(in a straight line that is). Who has he ever covered, do you think he can handle Reggie Bush coming out of the backfield on a wheel pattern or cover Winslow or Gonzalez on a post?

I dont mean to sound like I know this mans limitations, I just get where people believe he can make this transition, from what proof?

Do I think he can beat out James Anderson?

He was saying not as big a difference b/t 4-3 de to 3-4 olb as there is from 4-3 de to 4-3 lb

Thats fair enough. In my defense, I don't think he would start over Anderson, Conner or Williams. Not at least this season.

My main frustration is that I don't believe Brown can ever be an every down, COMPLETE DE. Everyone always compares him to Freeny and the problem is that while Freeny is one of the best pass rushers over the last 20 years, he is only an average DE overall and way too many time he takes himself completely out of the play.

Now that Hardy is stepping up the way he has been I just feel like Brown could be used as an everydown LB where as he may never be an every down DE.

However, your points are just as valid and very well could be that Brown may never be more than just a situational player.

LB Jon Beastson talked about the move to weak side linebacker today. He said he will only play at the “Will” or weak side spot about 20-25 plays per game, depending on how the game goes. (If the opposition passes a lot, it could be even less). He said in 4 of 5 defensive packages he will play the “Mike” or middle linebacker spot. We’ll have more from Beason in our “Tuesday Recap.”

And this

Beastson said when the regular season arrives he'll be the defensive player assigned to wear a microphone in his helmet and the one making the calls.

its pre-season, I wouldnt mind seeing how EB would handle it, if he sucked at it then put him back on the line, but it would be worth a try, i say anyway

Never happen. He just needs to step up and be a good DE for us rather than take a year or two to learn a new position
