You're right but I think the local guys know more than most. Gantt is pretty trustworthy. Most of his predictions about the coaching search came through.

Minus the big one where the Big Cat called him out at a press conference for being wrong...

Yasinskas isn't technically "local" these days.

I really agree with Mort. I think Cam can be special as a player in the NFL. I think it's pretty much locked in that Cam will be #1, the Panthers are just making it seem like it isn't. I think Cam is no doubt on the top of the list of 8 or so guys they have.

when you get down to the final weeks you really have to start taking everything you hear out of the guys making the decisions with some skepticism..There isn't a point in tipping what their plans our right now. You basically hear whatever you want to hear in these interviews.

Related note: Joe Person says via Twitter that the Panthers "like Peterson a lot".

Means about as much as anything else being said at this point, I guess (i.e. somewhere between something and nothing).

I honestly don't think Hurney has allowed himself to make up his mind yet... no reason to make it up at this point, I'm sure he wants to wait until as late as possible so he feels 100% certain when they make the call that it's the right choice.

What's pretty clear in listening is that they both are very much against rookies starting early.

I got a totally different impression.

In a perfect world it's clear they would like to be able to sit a rookie. But Rivera emphasized that whoever they picked at one would be expected to make an impact on the team from day 1.

Seems he was dancing around the question so he wouldn't tip his hand as to whether or not they wanted to go QB with the first pick.

I think Rivera is keeping an open mind on the starting from day 1 idea.

Depends on what position you're talking about.

If it's quarterback, they prefer they not have to start immediately.

Any other spot, they're looking for someone who can make an immediate impact.

I actually got the impression Marguide did... that the money and needs of the position you're drafting mean you're expecting immediate contribution, even if it doesn't come in the form of starting from day 1, but that has to be a possibility... especially if they can make an impact outside of just the side of ball they're focused on (aka Peterson imo)

I agree that Hurney and Rivera are telling the truth when they say the decision hasn't been made yet, but I don't think they're going to have some sort of ceremony where they officially and once and for all "decide" either. I think they're just being deliberate at marching towards the decision, even if they have a really good idea of who it's going to be already. It's a convenient lie wrapped in a truth that allows them to be coy and keep their options open.
