From PFT:

Jimmy Clausen got some attention a few weeks back when he said (with a smile) that he wasn’t going to easily give up his number (or job) to Cam Newton.

Panthers punter and NFLPA* rep Jason Baker, who has heard the issue brought up a few times locally, is tired of the topic.

“I certainly hope that the guy who takes the snaps this fall at quarterback is more interested in the playbook and running an offense than he is the shirt that he wears over his pads,” Baker told the Charlotte Observer. ”I’d like to win some games this fall. It’s more fun that way.”

Awesome. Baker could potentially get embroiled in this vital controversy because he wears No. 7. That’s the jersey Clausen reportedly wanted when he came to the team last year, but Baker wouldn’t give it up.

“I have no intent to change jerseys and haven’t been approached to do so,” Baker said.

We feel Baker’s pain. Everyone is just a little crankier in a lockout.

So Baker doesn't understand why a jersey number is so important to Clausen or Cam, but he won't give his up?

Sorry, this is really simple for me - Cam is supposed to be our franchise QB, he should get whatever number he wants. They should take Baker's 7 and give it to Jimmy so Cam can have 2. If Baker doesn't like that they should ask him why it's such a big deal what number is on his shirt while he's punting.

Doubt they're doing it for his entertainment.

Get a punter who can also do kickoffs. Cut Baker, Jimmy and Cam trade; problem solved.

On second thought, if Baker doesn't like it they should cut his ass and find another punter... problem solved.

And no, Cam should get to pick from available numbers, he's done nothing to jerk the number from a vet.

That is far and away one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on here. And I've been around for a few years now. Cam will select from whatever numbers are left. He gets no special treatment simply because he was drafted with the first pick. To think otherwise is insanity.

We need ST help and he's one of the better punters in the league, cutting him
Is just stupid- especially over something as trivial as this.

I know one year makes you a vet but it shouldn't. Players are normally still proving themselves in year two.

Fair point, but Baker is the lynch pin in this and he's a vet- a valuable vet.

Jimmy probably should have had the 7 last year and I'm sure something was said to Baker. Doesn't sound like a Clausen thing to not ask for it.

He sounds a little too defensive for it not to be and it doesn't help that he was 7 in college too. He just dosen't want the pressure to give his number up.

Baker is good. But how could he not be with all the experience he got last year?

You may disagree, but that's really the MOST ridiculous thing you've EVER read on here? LOL

I just find it ironic that Baker says he doesn't understand why it should be a big deal to Cam what number he wears, but Baker won't give up his number... hypocrisy at it's finest.
