I guess so if yo put it that way. All the "best defense is a good offense" people might not see it that way though. In any case it would be a neat addition especially if the guy was a true return threat.

oh...our primary backs get plenty of carries. they are effective in the role they play. we run the ball 30+ times a game and we split it between 3 guys. for 34 & 28 less carries means fresher legs late in the game.

the run game is fine. the number of carries is fine. the distribution is fine. adding a scat back won't effect too much, except adding more dimension. they will probably only see 5 carries a game if that and maybe some time on 3rd downs. we will probably run some more next year just because we'll do a better job of staying on the field and hopefully because we'll have better field position.

Field position helps the defense too.

true. one thing i liked about this bailey guy is the impact he has on special teams. he's a decent return guy, but he's brilliant against the punt. he's a punt blocking phenom.

that would be a truly marketable skill. A guy that is not only a great returner but also doubles as a gunner or block specialist and can change the game without the ball as well. In that situation you have a real standout commodity to go after and we should make a move without question. I think it will have to be something really special to make a real difference.

i'm excited by the possibility that the current coaching staff is not interested in sitting back and accepting what they have, and is conscious of further improving an already dangerous offense. sproles is a ridiculously good weapon for NO, and is good use of a roster spot due to his versatility. fulfilling one or both return slots, a regular ST slot, and a 3RB slot with one guy sounds like something you should always be on the lookout for.

yep. much better than the "everythings fine. it is what it is" philosophy of that last coach.

Mike Goodson is done in Charlotte, he may be able to latch on somewhere else; but he will have to fix that little fumbilitis problem he has. James would be a great pick if he is there in the fourth, however he probably won't escape the middle of the third. Nonetheless, it is fun to think about a Newton, Williams, Stewart, and James running tandem.

I wonder if we could look at a FA like Noel Devine, he might fit, though as of right now he's in the UFL.

A player we could draft is Chris Rainey out of Flordia in the 5th/6th, dude is fast as hell and can catch really well, might help on pr/kr too. He's great on Special teams too, and has blocked several punts.

His teammate, Jeff Demps, is also worth a look.

Scat back is fine as is punt returner, kickoff returner etc.It would be nice to find a guy who could do all three. But I have to agree with Crolls that it should not be a high priority. I agree with him that we need to build our team to beat our division opponents and win the division. That means stop the run and rush the passer with good secondary play. I think our D line is not that bad and I would focus on serious upgrades to the secondary and a starter for the SAM position if Davis goes down again. I think our DEs are fine and our nose tackle position has several candidates who will be returning. I would like to see us take a DE or a corner or a LB in the first 3 rounds. A DE because we need several pass rushers to keep up the pressure, a LB for now and the future and a corner to help Gamble. Obviously I would be fine with a Suh type DT in the first or second as well but don't know anyone who fits the bill right now. I also think we need to take a free safety in the middle of the draft unless we draft a corner earlier and consider converting them or one of the guys on the team already. But we need better coverage skills to match up better in our fire zone concept and cover the deep ball. As I have said all year, Martin is not very good and Godfrey isn't much better.

If we fix the back 7, the front 4 will look much better next year.

As for the offense, I would throw in several guys later in the draft. The only offensive guy I would consider early in the draft would be Blackmon who really is a beast. I still think the defense is where I would concentrate.

i think the disconnect is that no one actually considers it a priority. a discussion on adding a scat back at some point doesn't mean right away or particularly early. anything from round 5 on is fine because those guys are usually flyers anyways.

it's pretty well understood by everyone, including people in this thread that like the idea of a scat back here, that most of the attention in the offseason and the draft should be defense.

Agree with this. I have no issue taking chances with guys late in the draft. Hurney is actually pretty good finding diamonds in the rough. The isue with a scat back is that they are quick and fast but often smallish and prone to injury. It is hard to find a Sproles or MJD who are smaller but durable.

true, but hopefully they will be used in moderation (thus limiting exposure to injury and hits) and more of a "wrinkle" to the offense rather than a key cog in it.

What was his quote exactly? I didn't hear it. Did he say "we need a scat back" or did he say "We could use someone like Sproles"

Because every team in the NFL could use Darren Sproles. Not every scat back is going to have his ability.

Not the defense this year.
