I'd love to have him, but he is way out of our price range.

This.

I dont get all this NEVER GONAA HAPPEN!!! WE SO BROKE!!!!! NO CAP SPACE!!!!

Look, its all about how you can manipulate the numbers. Not only that but there will be roster moves made.

Someone you least expect will be cut or traded before the draft. We will unload or restructure several deals.

So get off the we dont have money bullshit.

If Jones and Snyder can spend out the ass every year im sure we can do it two in a row.

I like him bunches

I am not sure that he is the type player you bring in when you have some budding talent in house thoug. He does not seem like the teacher, nurturer our guys like Applewhite, Hardy, etc. would benefit from.

Just like Favre would never have been a good move for Jimmy the Pick and Keyshawn (my personal belief) quite possibly discouraged the careers of Colbert, Jarret, and Cater (or at least one of them) some players are not right. This is not a knock on Williams at all I just think the timing is wrong and it would send the wrong message. The championship teams build youth and the perennial @.500 teams are constantly playing catch-up and rely on the big FA splash model.

You can only invest so much money in a position. If CJ had left I would be all for it...of course I would rather have $150M tied up in two DE's then $80M tied up in two RB's

as much as I love double trouble, I agree with this completely.

ETA:

RB would be the very next position, and a close second place that I fully endorse spending the cash after DE.

The only players we are going to over pay is the ones we draft. Everyone should forget about any top players in the league cause its just not going to happen.

I have been soundly criticized for bringing up trading Stewart to someone before or during the upcoming draft.

But, not only would it give us another draft pick or two, but free up some money for FA's like possibly Mario. Everyone wants to PooPoo the idea of trading Stewart, but what if you think of it in terms of trading Stewart for the chance of getting Williams?

Would you do it?

I agree here, just too much youth that is unproven but has tape from last year. Some of these guys that got their first real battle scars last year and went down early or got bashed for not being immediate difference makers. This year they all have an offseason full of OTA's and an intact coaching staff to mold them.

I am excited about some of these guys that are still young along our defense. I have not given up on guys like Kearse, Keiser, Neblett, Applewhite, Hogan, and even Fua.

I believe in McDermott and Riv working together again. If they bring in a couple studs in the draft and stir the pot we are looking for a big jump IMO with built in depth.

Stewart has a cap hit of 2.6 next season. Trading him won't do poo to help pay for Mario

Think beyond next season.

Are you going to resign Stewart? If so, he will cost much more then 2.6 per season. If you sign Mario, you let his hit me smaller in the first season. That goes for any great DE or OLB we might sign. The draft is lean in these two categories so FA is the way to go.

draft not lean where we pick in the first two

when looking for starters, draft picks over FA ftw!

build it, you cannot buy it. See Dan Snyder.

I was watching moneyball the other night and I think the same thing could apply to the Panthers this year. We don't need to pay 20 milion for Mario Williams we need his kind of numbers for less. If we an't find all that in 1 guy, maybe we need 2 guys who can do what he can. For example when we paired Tyler Brayton who good against the run on first and second down with Johnson who was a pretty good pass rusher, together they held down the spot. So if we consider Hardy a pretty good pash rusher, who could we get for first and second down who is good against the run but not as quick?

the Mario Williams thing was just an example of FA and the fact that we cannot afford someone, but have high priced, part time running backs.

By the way, who are all the 4-3 linebackers that can step in and play right away for the upcoming draft?

I think what you call "part-time" running backs is becoming more of a standard than a luxury. Having two of the calibre that we have is definitely an advantage over most but the sum of the parts, to me, is more than the parts themselves. I think we lose more than just a player if we lose either one of those guys. Just me maybe.

I am not sure that there are any 4-3 guys ready to start right away. I really do not think that is a concern right now, not top two rounds anyway. But I do think that plenty of DT's and DE's have been mentioned in the draft forum that could make an immediate impact.
