Never. Never ever.

75% of fans think that 3-4 means to have 4 good LB's playing at the same time.

Wait it's more then that....SHOCKING!!

The LB core of Anderson-Beason-Kuechly-Davis sounds damn good.

Except for the fact we dont have a Jack LB in there.

I don't see us making a complete switch right now. I think that we'll dabble, if you will, from play to play to keep offenses off balance.

The two most important pieces of the 34 are OLB and NT.

We have neither.

Actually there has been indications we could use a hybrid defense which will use both 4-3 and 3-4 looks depending on the opponent and the situation. As for last year we went with a 4-3-4 51% of the time and a 4-2-5 38% of the time which means 90% of the time we used a 4 man front.

So Ron Rivera has cleared this up and said that the 3-4 will be an OPTION in our defense. Citing that when teams have to prepare for more than one defense its better for us.

This was covered yesterday:

According to NFL.com's Michael Lombardi, the Panthers are switching to a 3-4 defense.

Lombardi matter-of-factly dropped the news in a season preview, suggesting the switch has been common knowledge in league circles for some time. The alignment change has never been reported by the Charlotte Observer, which would be quite a miss for the Panthers' home paper. If true, the move wouldn't be entirely out of the blue, as coach Ron Rivera has extensive experience running a 3-4, while some draft observers believed No. 9 pick ILB Luke Kuechly would be a better fit in a 3-4 scheme. We'll know whether Lombardi's story has legs within a few days.

Same day:

The Associated Press' Steve Reed disputes NFL.com's report that the Panthers are switching from a 4-3 to 3-4 base defense.

Asked on Twitter whether Michael Lombardi's report was true, Reed responded with a flat "no." Reed is a Panthers' beat writer, so he's the more reliable source on the matter. It's also highly unlikely the entire local Carolina media would have missed such a major development. Perhaps Lombardi was just assuming things based on coach Ron Rivera's history with a 3-4 defense and Carolina's selection of ILB Luke Kuechly with the No. 9 pick.

I think there is a difference between running a 3-4 and a coach willing to explore some situational 3-4 looks.
