Despite earning a record $4.9 billion profit last year and projecting even better results for 2012, the company is insisting on a six-year wage freeze and a pension freeze for most of the 780 production workers at its factory here. Caterpillar says it needs to keep its labor costs down to ensure its future competitiveness.

The company’s stance has angered the workers, who went on strike 12 weeks ago. “Considering the offer they gave us, it’s a strike we had to have,” said Albert Williams, a 19-year Caterpillar employee, as he picketed in 99-degree heat outside the plant, which makes hydraulic parts and systems essential for much of the company’s earth-moving machinery.

Caterpillar, which has significantly raised its executives’ compensation because of its strong profits, defended its demands, saying many unionized workers were paid well above market rates. To run the factory during the strike, the company is using replacement workers, managers and a few union members who have crossed the picket line.

You may already be overpaid for the actual job that you do. That is what happened in Detroit...janitors were making 80k plus because of the unions.

Not saying this is what has happened at your location, but it can be an issue.

I wasn't aware one could be "overpaid" in a capitalistic society.

Crazy Caterpillar.

Creating jobs here in North Carolina on the backs of union wage increases in Illinois.

To shame. Profit sharing has gone the way of the dodo people.

They need to keep labor costs down while significantly increasing executive pay. That makes complete sense.

On a side note - aren't machinists in high demand?

Not Illinois machinists.

Cheaper ones to be had in NC.

Capitalist societies allow the market to set the wages. Unions are not capitalistic.

If you can't be overpaid, you can't be underpaid, either. Yin and yang.

That's true.

Good luck finding new machinists.

To everyone here defending the executives, fug you. Don't see them declining raises and bonuses to help "keep competitive" here

80k? seriously? Do you have a link to those numbers? I'd be curious to read about all of it.

edit: found quite a few, about other places, often due to overtime, working at two locations, etc. Still seems... quite a high salary
