Panthers coordinators focus on fundamentals

To me its pretty easy on defense get pressure on the qb and on offense you have to block. We do not have talent for a 4 man rush so bring what it takes.I am very disappointed we drafted we drafted a very high 2nd round pick for the OL and we have regressed. When will Hurney learn?

This is sooooooooo common sense

We obviously have guys that can get to the QB in Frank, Keiser, Applewhite. Find ways to just bring the pressure. We have freaking 2, not 1 but 2 defensive guys...

silatolu was poo his first game but he's played extremely well both games after that. with the full lineup in we looked outstanding against new orleans. against NYG we were missing bell, who i think is more instrumental than we give him credit for.

McDerp wasn't planning on teaching fundamentals until the Bye week, but due to a change of plans they will be taught early.

Thanks, Sean.

McDermott

"We're ready to get back to fundamentals and doing what we do well".

I read that, and asked myself, what is it exactly that this defense does well? I couldn't come up with an answer.

Truth hurts.

I can only think of...damn I can't think of anything.

You could tell by the way our defense tried to tackle that they have never gone over fundamentals.

Flailing recklessly toward the opponent does not equate to tackling.

We aren't athletic enough on defense. We don't have anyone who can take over on big plays. Our MLB is not 100%. Our corners play soft. Our safeties play 30 yds deep. We lack speed all across the board. And the one good athlete we do have (kuechly) gets taken off the field every other play which is ridiculous to me...Davis only plays a few snaps a series...

We are hurtin on D

I said this D was gonna struggle before the season. I hate being right 60% of the time every time

I don't like how McDermott seemed to only blame the tackling.

It sounds like he wants to improve without having to change anything himself.

Sounds like scheme problems to me,and btw Davis>>Kuechly when it comes to athletic ability.

Our tackling woes I have to think are in part due to the 1 day of full contact each week. That's bullshit. Give 'em 3, max (most coaches will only use 2 in a week anyway, those days generally being Tuesday and Wednesday, with Thursday being half-contact). When you're only really going through the motions all week, it can be hard to just cut it on for some guys.

I like what was said for the most part. Now...translate those words into work and put out a good product come Sunday and MAYBE I'll be able to write off the Giants game as simply a bad game.

And Kuechly has been terrible in coverage so far.

Wouldn't say terrible. I think he's still adjusting to the speed. You have to be ready to break on those crossing routes quickly. In the college game, QBs take their time and wait a bit longer to hit those. When you have guys like Eli slinging it, you have to know where your zone is and get your head on a swivel looking for the man crossing and jump him, ride him to the next zone, and get back. He'll get there. He's been there for pursuit and minimizing gains, so that's good. Just needs to get to where he can actually break passes up. He did sniff out that screen last week. That was nice to see.

Not only did McDermott not blame himself for running zone all night, he doesn't even realize that he ran zone all night. If anything, he seems to think the opposite. I know you're trying to put a positive spin on this, but there is nothing good about McDermott having no clue where everything went wrong. This guy seems to have no idea where to start.

Agree.

We ran the completely wrong defensive scheme against the Giants.

The rush 4 play deep zone was getting crushed all night. Eli had time and his WR's just sat down in the soft middle of the zone. It was pitch and catch all night.

We should have run the same defensive scheme that we did against the Saints.
