if we were going full-scale crash-and-burn rebuild mode, trading him would make sense.

we're not going full-scale crash-and-burn rebuild mode.

jerry is smart enough to know that fans won't sit through another three seasons of starting from the bottom again. he'll call in a guy who can make some adjustments, bring in some outside help, get rid of a few protruding branches, and get this ship running smoothly again.

So we get rid of him and look for a number 1 AND number 2 receiver in the draft. Right.

Why would we be looking for a #2 WR? Think that spots already locked down.

What would we get? A 3rd? How many of those work out?

To be fair, Steve Smith himself was a 3rd round pick!

JUST SAYIN!!!

I love how the Huddle makes up its own reality and decides that it is the reality.

Smitty may actually be perfectly happy, but here "He is already leaving this offseason" is a fact.

You need to lose your loyalty to players who could care less where they play.

Panthers > "player"

Not in this case, being a special case in Smitty. What's Cam supposed to think if a year after being what 3rd in the League(1400 yards) in receiving yardage we blow out 89? :ass:

Several of you are caught up into the old narrative of status-quo, 8-8 being ok, and overpaying our guys and aging players.

Moving players off a sinking ship to free up space and add young talent or draft picks would be a prudent thing to do.

You are afraid, its ok, change is in the air...again...

Smitty isn't overpaid, DWill and Stewart on the other hand.........

Agreed. We need to go young and cleanse the losing attitude

imho you have to look at how New England, the NY Giants and Pittsburgh does it. They dont go young, they dont purge, they make wise, carefully calculted moves and continue to win year to year.

Only thing that needs cleansing most likely is JR's colon.

How many 2nd round picks have we gone through trying to find a wideout who can even sniff Smitty's jock?

Personally, I think Smith has another 2-4 years in him as a slot WR--he could create some problems inside if we had a good #1 WR. We have needed a true #1 for a while.

#1 WR (free agent off season signing), Louis Murphy

slot: Steve Smith, Joe Adams

#2 WR Brandon Lafell, David Gettis

I would trade Smitty for a day two pick, however--let Adams and Pilares run the slot, Lafell and Murphy outside. I would trade Smitty for a good free safety or solid DT.

Loyalty to players beyond their peak playing days gets a GM fired. The best teams (New england, Pittsburgh) are champs because they do not get screwed by holding players too long. (See Hines Ward)

So does that make Byron Bell worthless then?
