I believe it is a tactic employed by many winning teams. I believe the Patriots are known to do it and I have a faint recollection of them doing it against the Panthers in the SB. Am I imagining that?

The Panthers have a long history of sucking in the third quarter after the opposition makes adjustments....and we don't.

Most teams want the ball in the 2nd half. Momentum changer especially if you can score last in the 1st half and come out again with a score to start the 2nd.

I'm pretty sure that deferring wasn't allowed in the NFL until the late 2000's...

Edit: They obviously got the ball, but he wouldn't say that if he didn't get the choice to defer it or not.

i think it puts more pressure on the other team.... or person in anything really, making them go first
