Newspaper prints interactive map with names and addresses of individuals licensed to own handguns

just did some digging and found that gun permits are a matter of public record in the state of NY. anyone can go search the registry and find out who's packing. so there's nothing legally to challenge here, only ethical questions... is this irresponsible journalism? i'd say so.

I agree, legally there is no problem, but it is irresponsible.

I wonder how the employees of the newspaper would feel if someone set up a website with their addresses listed, along with the tax value of their homes. That is also publicly available information. Well at least it is in North Carolina. I assume its that way in New York.

The only basis he seems to suggest for this comes from a quote from someone else:

Combined with laws that allow the purchase of rifles and shotguns without a permit, John Thompson, a program manager for Project SNUG at the Yonkers Family YMCA, said that leaves the public knowing little about the types of deadly weapons that might be right next door.

“I would love to know if someone next to me had guns. It makes me safer to know so I can deal with that,” said Thompson, whose group counsels youths against gun violence. “I might not choose to live there.”

It's not unreasonable to want to know which neighbor's horseplaying kids may send death shrapnel through your wall at any moment.

Interestingly, if those guys who posted his address have the right guy, and if he does in fact have a gun permit, he appears to deliberately left off the map he wrote a story about (though he apparently did not actually make the map according to Snopes)

I'm pretty sure they're doing it to correlate gun owners with sex offenders.

It's been posted on this board multiple times. I think people won't hit the Pie button as much this time around.

As you all know I was very pro assualt rifle.

I just needed time to sit back and take in both sides of the argument.

I will sell the gov my AR. That's fine. I have no problem with that. But all my other non high capacity rifles are off limits. Except my .22 semi automatic rifle. ( with a 25 round clip.) My 9mm (17+1 in the chamber) off limits.

They can have it. I think I can efficiently protect my family with those.

My buddy showed me the results about how many LEO/Military would actually take up arms against its own citizens and it showed 90% said no. So Im not worried about that at all.

I will sell you my AR...but leave the rest of my guns and ammo alone.
