Trivia: When was the last time a shooting guard was drafted at #1?

Iverson '96? - nope, drafted as a point
Magic Johnson '79? - nope, LA drafted him mainly as a point who could play many positions
John Lucas '76? - not really, Rockets played him as a shooting guard his rookie season. He played point the rest of his career.
Doug Collins '73? - Yep. 40 years ago.

Actually I think the answer is David Thompson, I say this because even though Thompson wasn't a pure SG, neither was Doug Collins. If you are going off of a pure shooting guard, the answer would be Carr in 71'.

SG is a surprisingly weak position in the NBA. You've got Kobe and Wade, both on the downside of their career, then Harden and maybe Eric Gordon if he can stay healthy.

After that its a bunch of pretty good players but nothing special- Joe Johnson, Derozan, Afflalo, Klay Thompson, Mayo, Wes Mathews, Jamal Crawford. Between Shabazz and Mclemore this is a really good year for SGs
