Some of you guys take Charlotte for granted

When the traffic study was done in the mid-80s for that leg of 485, it was all farm land out there. They assumed a reasonable rate of traffic growth but they didn't/could have never foreseen the ballantyne/arboretum/rea road/johnston road population explosion.

The trouble with major new highway projects is that it takes about 20 years from conception to finish.

/our DOT is pretty good compared to most

Exactly

The thing that pisses me off is how long it's taken to finish the last leg.

It's called a turbine interchange and while it'll be the first in NC, it's not quite that rare.

You might be thinking about a diverging diamond, which a few are going in around the area in cornelius and concord.

That turbine thing is awesome Jase... I've seen a LOT of interchanges in my business and never anything like that...

That second one looks like a nightmare...

Look at the youtube I posted, it gives an idea of just how far out you have to drive to interchange from one interstate to the other, but hopefully keeping speed up which will net it a faster intersection. Or so the fancypants predictions say.

The diverging diamond is what they're putting at exit 52. Like I said, many bumpkins will be killed before they figure it out.

We have 3 traffic circles in Davidson and it's amazing how clueless people are over them.

East Tennessee is my favorite place in the world

So you're into giant trash cans with hills?

Edit: sorry that was a bit extreme. But east TN sucks balls IMO

So how does this diverging diamond thing work? The crossing of lanes thing..... Looks like something off the old Super Off Road Truck racing arcade game.

On April 6, 2010, the Charlotte suburb of Cornelius approved plans by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to convert the existing diamond interchange into a diverging diamond at the West Catawba/Catawba Exit (#28). This will be the first one in the state of North Carolina. Work is expected to finish by 2012.[47] North Carolina has also designed three other diverging diamonds in the Charlotte area, two on I-85 and one on I-485, and is studying diverging diamonds at Asheville, Kernersville, Lumberton, and Leland, for a total of eight[citation needed] projects in North Carolina. Construction for the first DDI in North Carolina's Triad region is underway at I-40 and Union Cross Road in Winston-Salem.[48]

They must be behind on the exit #28 one...
